Description

Title: Assistant Custodian

Classification: Part-time, Non-Exempt (range 24-29 hours per week)

Compensation: $20.80 per hour

Department: Facilities

Reports To: Facilities Manager

Mission:The Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History inspires a thirst for discovery and a passion for the natural world.

Position Summary: Provides custodial services and assists in the maintenance services for the museum’s buildings and campus. At times will assist in the care of the grounds and assisting the museum’s Groundskeeper. Provide services in moving equipment, exhibit displays, furniture, receiving shipments and storing supplies.In addition, this position provides services ensuring a secure and safe environment for our museum guests and staff and provides support to the museum’s facility use and the museum’s exhibition programs where assigned.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Provide housekeeping and general janitorial maintenance of all museum buildings.
  • Assist with maintenance of facilities.
  • Take assignments and projects from senior custodial and facilities staff.
  • Assist in care and maintenance for the grounds and museum landscaping.
  • Provide support to museum events and facilities use as directed.
  • Maintain clean and safe areas for museum guests and staff.
  • Work with the other custodial staff to maintain the museum’s housekeeping schedule.
  • Advise supervisor and other custodial staff of supplies needed.
  • Help move and deliver supplies.
  • Ensure workspace is clean and clear of clutter consistent with Museum and department operations and safety procedures.
  • Supports the Museum’s commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion for fellow staff, guests and the community.
  • Contributes to a positive guest experience by greeting and addressing any questions when encountering guests as they navigate through the Museum and Sea Center.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Essential Requirements:

  • Able to operate and use a hand truck for moving supplies.
  • Able to use ladders.
  • Able to regularly work one weekend day.
  • Able to follow verbal and written instructions; good auditory skills with a full range of hearing and good vision including acuity, depth perception, and color vision.
  • Comfortable Basic computer skills, ability to use email and communicate using the Museum’s Microsoft Outlook, basic Microsoft Word.
  • Comfortable working around the general public.
  • Able to respond to emergency situations including but not limited to chemical spills, fires, and evacuations.
  • Flexible time management (working around other departments and projects).
  • Able to safely operate electric transport cart.
  • Must hold a valid California Driver’s License with a clean driving record, to become an authorized driver of Museum vehicles.

Desirable skills:

  • Knowledge and experience using a variety of small power tools.
  • Painting, drywall, carpentry.
  • Mechanical repair of small equipment.

Work Environment:

  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, sitting, climbing (stairs & ladders), crawling, and lifting of moderate to heavy loads (50lbs)
  • Occasional work in elevated places.
  • Frequent work throughout all Museum facilities including conference facilities, galleries, exhibit halls, presentation halls, research laboratories, storage rooms, roofs, and maintenance and/or metal/wood shop.
  • Frequent work outdoors, walking grounds and in inclement weather.
  • Occasional work with and possible exposure to chemicals, including cleaning agents, paint, gasoline, and other solvents.
