Position Type: Hourly Part-Time Classified

Anticipated Start Date: Upon Hire

Salary/Wage: Hourly

Salary/Wage Range: $21.47 - $31.49 per hour (Classified Hourly Pay Grade 10)

  • This position works on an as-needed basis and is a temporary assignment based on student, college, and division needs.
  • Applicants will be asked to identify one primary shift (days, evenings, or nights) for as-needed work. Selected candidates will be expected to be available during the preferred shift. Other shifts will be available as well, but availability for the preferred shift is essential.
  • Variable work hours based on department needs; schedule may vary with hours increasing up to 40 hrs a week during peak periods, up to 1039 hours in a twelve (12) month period.
  • Initial training may be full-time for up to ten (10) weeks.
  • Officers in this position provide shift coverage on a regular basis and will have the opportunity to work the maximum hours. Coverage is provided for sick leave, vacation, unassigned shifts, campus emergencies, and numerous other occasions.
  • In addition to weekday shifts, weekend, morning, over-night, and/or evening hours may be scheduled depending on department needs.
  • One (1) year of law enforcement, security, and/or Emergency Medical Technician Certification experience. Such experience may include (but is not limited to) military security or law enforcement, parole/probation, corrections, reserve police/sheriff, sworn law enforcement, or private security.
  • Successful completion of the LCC Public Safety Cadet program will satisfy the experience requirement.
  • This experience must involve working in an environment where human relations, interpersonal and problem-solving skills are used.
Licensure or Certification Requirements
  • Must have or be able to obtain a State of Oregon Driver’s license within one week of hire.
  • Current first aid/ CPR / AED card
Conditions of Employment:

The following requirements must be met by selected candidates to work in this position:

  • Be able to pass a psychology evaluation designed for police officers.
  • Meet the Oregon State level requirements as a public safety officer within one (1) month of hire.
  • Successful applicant is required to pass a criminal background check including a national fingerprint check and meet the standards of ORS 181.875 regarding criminal history before employment is confirmed.
  • A pre-employment physical assessment and drug screen is required.
  • Must not have been convicted of a felony or any crime involving false statements or dishonesty within the last fifteen (15) years.
  • Must work and reside in the state of Oregon at the time their work is being performed.
Preferred QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred Education

Post-secondary education, including but not limited to, Public Safety, Law Enforcement, Criminal Justice, Criminology, Crime Scene Investigation, Legal Studies, Law School, Forensic Science, Police Academy, Sheriff Academy.

Preferred Experience

Current or past sworn (or military) law enforcement experience.

Position Purpose:

Officers patrol the Lane campus and provide immediate response to threats, emergencies, and dangerous situations. Officers provide law enforcement, rules enforcement, and crime prevention for the campus community.

Essential Functions:

  • Enforce public laws and campus rules.
  • Routinely conduct traffic stops, respond to fire and medical emergencies, assist persons in distress, and maintain order on campus.
  • Operate patrol vehicles (motor vehicles, bicycles, and motorized vehicles).
  • Officers must have sufficient fitness to perform all essential functions of a law enforcement officer, including making unaided arrests, rendering first aid and CPR, and responding to environmental and other campus emergencies.
  • Operate technical devices including computer systems, cameras, radios, alarm systems inside campus buildings, on-campus lands and in all weather conditions.
  • Interact with belligerent individuals and resolve disputes using the minimum level of enforcement action necessary.
  • Actively participate in training and master law enforcement tools such as batons, chemical sprays, and handcuffs.
  • Monitor and enforce parking regulations.
  • Fully participate in the on-campus judicial system and work with other law enforcement and fire agencies.
  • Problem solve and manage sensitive information with appropriate awareness of FERPA standards; maintain confidentiality and sensitivity to the privacy needs of students.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Supervision Statement:

Reports to and works under the general supervision of the Director of Public Safety & Emergency Preparedness (Chief) and designated command staff. Work is performed independently using knowledge of applicable procedures, rules, regulations and statutes (federal, ORS, and local). Work is reviewed periodically to assure conformance with established policies and to measure results.

Positions in this classification may coordinate and lead the work of student assistants and other Public Safety employees.

Physical Demands/Working Environment:

  • Climb stairs, walk and stand for extended periods of time.
  • Officers must occasionally run to emergency calls.
  • Officers must be able to operate a motor vehicle for extended periods.
  • Officers must be able to lift a fifty (50) lb weight, have normal strength and range of motion and use of all limbs.
  • Officer eyesight should be correctable to 20/20 and unassisted vision should minimally be 20/200.
