Job description

Part-Time | Hourly | On-Site in Westport, CT

Our fundamental belief at Freudigman & Billings is that children learn best in the context of supportive relationships. We are committed to helping our students better understand how they learn and how they can take ownership of that learning. Our team provides educational solutions for middle and high school students through individual assessment, personally tailored learning programs, and one-on-one instruction.

The Role

Instructors at Freudigman & Billings provide individualized academic support and coaching for high school students. This is a part-time, hourly position for an educator or experienced mentor who enjoys working one-on-one with adolescents and is excited by the opportunity to help students become more confident, capable, and independent learners.

Instructors work closely with students to build academic skills, strengthen executive functioning, develop productive habits, and follow through on individualized educational plans. The work goes beyond teaching content. We help students understand how they learn, identify what is getting in their way, and develop the skills and confidence they need to take greater ownership of their education.

The ideal candidate is organized, intellectually curious, empathetic, and charismatic, with the ability to build genuine relationships with teenagers while maintaining appropriate structure and professional boundaries. You should be comfortable working flexibly with students who have different learning styles, needs, and personalities, and be willing to learn and grow as an educator.

Key Responsibilities
  • Work one-on-one with high school students to implement individualized academic plans.
  • Provide academic skill-building across areas including organization, time management, study strategies, planning, prioritization, and follow-through.
  • Support students with homework, projects, test preparation, and subject-specific coursework that supports mastery of skills.
  • Help students develop stronger executive functioning skills and greater independence as learners.
  • Build trusting, respectful relationships with students while maintaining appropriate expectations and boundaries.
  • Identify teachable moments and flexibly adjust your approach based on a student's needs, motivation, and learning style.
  • Track student progress, compliance, and outcomes and maintain thorough session case notes.
  • Participate in case reviews, staff training, and team meetings.
  • Collaborate with F&B's instructional team to ensure that students receive consistent, comprehensive support.
  • Remain open to feedback and continuously develop your instructional and coaching skills.
The Ideal Candidate Will
  • Have experience working with middle or high school students in an educational, mentoring, coaching, or related setting.
  • Have strong academic skills, with particular comfort navigating high school math and science coursework.
  • Possess exceptional organizational and executive functioning skills.
  • Be an excellent communicator with strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Have strong observation skills and the ability to recognize when a student needs a different approach.
  • Be empathetic, patient, and emotionally intelligent.
  • Be able to connect with teenagers while maintaining professionalism and appropriate boundaries.
  • Be flexible and comfortable adapting instruction and coaching to individual students.
  • Be intellectually curious and interested in understanding how students learn.
  • Be coachable and receptive to feedback, recognizing that effective teaching is an ongoing practice.
  • Have a Bachelor's degree or be currently pursuing a degree in a relevant field.
  • Be able to pass a background check.
