Job Description

DEFINITION:

Under the direction of the classroom teacher, the Behavior Assistant will provide support one to one to a student with behavioral issues. The Behavior Assistant will implement comprehensive positive behavioral support plans and effective behavior management strategies; deliver instructions; participate as a member of the educational team, and help design and implement all components of the student's individual program.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND JOB DUTIES

Any one position may not include all of the listed duties, nor do all of the listed examples include all tasks that may be found in positions within this classification.

  • Assist the classroom teacher in all aspects of classroom instruction and behavior support.
  • Implement Behavior Strategic Plan/Behavior Intervention Plan.
  • Implement behavior strategies.
  • Support students throughout the school day including recess and lunch.
  • Supervise students throughout the school day in classrooms, during educational activities, and during recess and lunch.
  • Consult and collaborate with site staff.
  • Assist in student assessments as appropriate.
  • Participate in IEP meetings as appropriate.
  • Maintain appropriate documentation, records, and reports.
  • Participate in developing data collection systems, and monitor data collection to ensure the success of the behavior plan.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Certification in the Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) in non-violent crisis interventions is desired.
  • First Aid and CPR training required (training available through the district).
KNOWLEDGE OF
  • Basic concepts of child growth and development and developmental behavior characteristics, particularly pertaining to pupils with special learning needs.
  • Behavior management strategies and techniques relating to pupils experiencing behavioral difficulties.
  • Positive behavioral interventions and applied behavior analysis.
  • Appropriate English usage, punctuation, spelling, and grammar.
  • Basic mathematical concepts.
  • Routine record storage, retrieval, and management procedures.
ABILITY TO
  • Work with students having special needs and/or aggressive behaviors (i.e. biting, kicking, hitting, emotional outburst, etc.).
  • Demonstrate an understanding, patient, and receptive attitude toward students of varied age groups, and varied disabilities.
  • Appropriately manage student behavior and guide student toward more acceptable social behaviors.
  • Implement positive behavior support plans.
  • Model appropriate behavioral interventions.
  • Communicate effectively in oral and written form.
  • Perform routine clerical tasks and operate a variety of educational and office related machines and equipment.
  • Learn to utilize a variety of appropriate instructional materials and procedures in the enhancement of a training and educational environment.
  • Understand and carry out oral and written directions.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with children and adults.
  • Work with staff in developing data collection systems, and monitor data collection to ensure the success of the behavior plan.

Belmont Elementary School is located in Belmont, New Hampshire, which is in the central part of the state in the Lakes Region. The school has approximately 330 students in pre-school through grade four and 75 staff members. Belmont Elementary School strives to create a highly integrated curriculum for our students. Students in third and fourth grade may also participate in chorus and vocal ensemble. We have a school store run by fourth graders where students can purchase supplies. Belmont Elementary has a nature trail on our campus where we can teach children more about nature and conservation, as well as an outdoor classroom. Belmont Elementary School is a wonderful place to learn and grow. The school is located south of Laconia and north of Concord, New Hampshire. Job Requirements
  • This is a 4.50 hour, 3 days per week position and does not qualify for district-sponsored benefits. This position is for 115 days.
  • Successful completion, with satisfactory results. of a post-offer, pre-employment criminal background check, including fingerprints, is required.
  • Associates Degree or NHDOE Paraeducator Certification is required. At least 3 years of relevant experience preferred.
  • At least 3 year(s) of relevant experience preferred.
  • Associate degree preferred.
  • Citizenship, residency or work visa required.
