Job summary

City of Lufkin is seeking a Laborer I to assist in maintaining and enhancing our community parks and recreational spaces. The role supports park amenities, grounds upkeep, and event setup under the Parks & Recreation Department.

The position requires physical work, the ability to operate hand and power tools, and flexibility for weekend or evening shifts for special events. A Texas driver license is preferred and prior manual labor experience is advantageous.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Perform manual labor tasks including landscaping, grounds maintenance, and facility upkeep.
• Assist in installation and repair of park amenities, equipment, and infrastructure.
• Operate and maintain hand tools and power equipment for tasks.
• Support preparation and cleanup of special events and programs in parks.
• Perform routine inspections to identify maintenance needs and safety compliance.
• Maintain safe and clean work environment by following safety protocols and guidelines.
• Collaborate with team and follow supervisory instructions.
• Ensure proper disposal of waste per departmental policies.
• Respond to emergencies such as storm damage or hazards as directed.

Position: Laborer I

Department: Parks & Recreation

Reports To: Parks Superintendent

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Pay: $13.65 per hour

Description

Responsible for contributing to the maintenance and enhancement of our community's recreational spaces.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
• Previous experience in manual labor or related field is preferred.
• Valid Texas Driver license at time of placement.
• Flexibility to work weekends or evenings for special events or projects.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Knowledge of landscaping and maintenance practices.
• Knowledge of using hand and power tools, lawn equipment, welders, cutting torches, and various carpentry tools.
• Knowledge of electrical, carpentry, welding, and plumbing procedures.
• Skills in strong verbal and written communication.
• Ability to perform strenuous physical labor and to work outdoors in various weather conditions.

Major Duties

• Perform manual labor tasks, including but not limited to landscaping, grounds maintenance, and facility upkeep.
• Assist in the installation and repair of park amenities, equipment, and infrastructure.
• Operate and maintain various hand tools and power equipment as required for assigned tasks.
• Participate in the preparation and cleanup of special events and programs hosted within parks.
• Perform routine inspections of park areas to identify and report maintenance needs.
• Support a safe and clean work environment by adhering to safety protocols and guidelines.
• Collaborate with team members and follow instructions from supervisory staff.
• Ensure proper disposal of waste and debris in compliance with departmental policies.
• Respond to emergency situations, such as storm damage or hazardous conditions, as directed.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Parks and Recreation Department.

This position is an essential service position and will require providing services during emergency situations.
