Job description

Under the supervision of the Parks Supervisor, this position performs general parks, trails, and open space maintenance and repair. The role involves maintaining assigned city parks and trails, assisting in the maintenance of other areas as assigned, and providing exemplary customer service to employees and citizens of the City of Fruita.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The employee performs a variety of duties across all areas of Parks, including but not limited to:

  1. Maintaining parks, trails, and open spaces, including landscaping, tree planting, mowing, trimming, fertilizing, pruning, irrigating, weeding, restroom, and trash maintenance.
  2. Managing turf for athletic fields, including fertilization, aerating, topdressing, and controlling weeds, insects, and diseases.
  3. Maintaining dirt playing fields, including infield skin, baselines, home plate, pitcher’s mound, bullpens, and warning track.
  4. Inspecting playgrounds in city parks.
  5. Repairing and maintaining irrigation systems; attendance at regular irrigation classes is required.
  6. Operating and transporting riding mower equipment, hand and power tools, skid steer, backhoe, brush hog, and chainsaw.
  7. Supporting city and community special events.
  8. Performing snow removal on city sidewalks and trails.
  9. Developing and maintaining safe working practices and PPE standards.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Assists with supervising part-time parks maintenance workers and community service workers.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Education, Training, and Experience:

High school diploma or GED, fit for duty, with at least two years of experience in parks and facilities maintenance. Arborist experience is preferred. Must be at least 18 years old.

Special Licenses, Registrations, or Certificates:

Satisfactory driving record required. Forklift, flagger, and Master Gardener certifications are preferred. CDL license is also preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of parks, trails, and open space management principles and practices.
  • Skilled in operating riding mowers, blowers, trimmers, and trailer loading/unloading.
  • Ability to oversee volunteers and staff.
  • Effective communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships and maintain excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to meet deadlines, manage multiple tasks, and work non-traditional hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Requires frequent climbing, balancing, kneeling, crawling, crouching, reaching, grasping, feeling, and repetitive motions. Must be able to lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50 pounds. Vision abilities include close vision and focus adjustment. Work environment varies from inside to outside, often in inclement weather, with noise levels from moderate to extremely noisy. The position requires on-call hours.
