Job summary

The City of Galveston is seeking a Maintenance Worker to perform grounds maintenance, mowing, weed control, landscaping, irrigation maintenance, and basic facility upkeep at parks and recreation centers.

Under supervision, you will operate light vehicles, clean facilities, assist with painting and minor repairs, maintain flowerbeds, trim trees and shrubs, and interact professionally with citizens and staff while ensuring safety and timely services.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or equivalent.
• One year of experience in parks facilities maintenance and repair operations.
• Valid Texas Driver’s License.

SUMMARY:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Performs grounds maintenance around parks, recreational fields and buildings.
• Mows grass.
• Removes weeds.
• Grooms fields.
• Operates light motorized vehicles and equipment.
• Cleans parks and recreational facilities.
• Performs basic landscaping.
• Maintains flowerbeds.
• Performs traffic control as assigned.
• Picks up trash and debris.
• Mows grass.
• Trims trees and shrubs.
• Removes weeds.
• Perform interior building cleaning.
• Cleans floors and windows.
• Performs minor maintenance on equipment.
• May perform maintenance and repair of irrigation systems.
• May perform painting projects.
• Supports the relationship between the City of Galveston and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with citizens, visitors, and City staff.
• Maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and City information.
• Performs other duties as required or assigned.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

Knowledge:

• City organization, operations, policies, and procedures.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

High School diploma or equivalent; AND one year of experience in parks facilities maintenance and repair operations; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION:

Possession of a valid Texas Driver’s License.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

• Work is performed both in an indoor and outdoor work environment.
• May be exposed to dangerous machinery, extreme weather conditions, potential physical harm and hazardous chemicals.
• May be required to lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds.
• May be required to climb ladders.
• Employees may at any time be required to work in order to provide for the safety and well-being of the general public, including the delivery and restoration of vital services, in the event of an emergency.
