Job summary

City of Garland is seeking a skilled maintenance technician to perform general and specialized upkeep, repair, and installation across parks and facilities. You will operate heavy equipment, drive CDL vehicles, and help ensure safety and regulatory compliance.

The role may involve training Park Maintenance Workers, leading when the Crew Leader is away, and maintaining records and reports. A strong work ethic and ability to work outdoors in varied weather are essential.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED and 2 years related experience.
  • Valid Class C Texas driver's license.
  • TDA Pesticide Applicator certification within six months of hire.
  • Aquatics: CPO or AFO certification within six months of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Performs general and skilled maintenance, repair, and installation duties in assigned specialty area.
  • Operates CDL vehicles, tractors, heavy equipment, and specialty tools.
  • Diagnoses and corrects hazards, system failures, and maintenance issues.
  • Ensures compliance with regulatory standards (TDA, TCEQ, TAC).
  • Maintains records, logs, inventories, and work reports.
  • Trains and assists Park Maintenance Workers; may act as lead in Crew Leader's absence.
  • Operates a city vehicle to assist in routine maintenance.

Job description

Summary

Responsible for performing skilled manual labor tasks for the maintenance, repair, and installation work in assigned division. Responsible for operating heavy equipment, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards. Technicians require trade-specific knowledge and licenses, may work with greater independence, and may provide training and or guidance to small team of Park Maintenance Workers. Pay Range: (Depending on qualifications and experience) Work Schedule: TBD


Essential Duties and Responsibilities


  • Performs general and skilled maintenance, repair, and installation duties in assigned specialty area.

  • Operates CDL vehicles, tractors, heavy equipment, and specialty tools.

  • Diagnoses and corrects hazards, system failures, and maintenance issues.

  • Ensures compliance with (TDA), TCEQ, TAC and other applicable regulatory standards.

  • Maintains records, logs, inventories, and work reports.

  • Trains and assists Park Maintenance Workers; may act as lead in Crew Leader's absence.

  • Operates a city vehicle to assist in carrying out routine maintenance.


Division-Specific Duties and Responsibilities


  • Grounds/MROW: Advanced turf care, erosion control, ROW mowing, storm cleanup, tree trimming.

  • Athletics: Field renovation, turf treatments, drainage repair, tournament preparation; operates tractors, drags, and aerifiers.

  • Irrigation: Troubleshoots controllers, electrical/two-wire issues, repairs mainlines, installs irrigation systems.

  • Aquatics: Maintains pumps, motors, filters, heaters, chemical feeders, splash pad systems; conducts water chemistry testing.

  • Facilities: Performs concrete forming/finishing, carpentry, masonry, welding, and playground inspections/repairs.

  • Landscape: Maintains ornamental and floral beds, plants/shrubs/trees, applies pesticides/fertilizers, manages beautification projects, completes small irrigation repairs in landscape beds i.e. drip and popup heads.


Minimum Qualifications


  • High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) 2 years of related experience.

  • Valid Class C Texas driver's license.

  • Athletics, Grounds, Landscape: TDA Pesticide Applicator within six months of hire.

  • Aquatics: Certified Pool Operator (CPO) or Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO) within six months of hire.


Physical Requirements & Work Environment

Incumbent will be subjected to frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, lifting, reaching, pulling and pushing, and carrying up to 50 pounds. Work performed outdoors in extreme weather conditions, heat and cold, rain, humidity, wetness, insects. Exposure to dust, noise, fumes, traffic, and hazardous materials. May also be exposed to potential biohazards including trash, animal waste, bloodborne pathogens, and unsanitary conditions in public areas. May work in confined spaces, on ladders up to 12 feet, and near moving mechanical parts.
