Job description

Overview

The Department of Forests, Parks & Recreation seeks a forward-thinking, positive-minded, maintenance professional with a background in skilled trades work. This dynamic position is responsible for maintaining multiple state parks within the northwest region of Vermont. Work typically involving construction, structural maintenance, and repair of buildings, grounds, and operation and maintenance of utilities such as water and wastewater systems. This position oversees maintenance and repair of motor vehicles, tractors, and small engine equipment at assigned parks. This position is part of a larger team of maintenance professionals and will often work together on larger projects in the offseason. An ideal candidate is flexible and works well both independently and in a collaborative environment. Preference for experience in state, national or community park facilities and maintenance.



This position will be based out of either the Knight Point State Park maintenance shop in North Hero, VT or the Lake Carmi State Park maintenance shop in Franklin, VT.

Environmental Factors

Work is performed in shop and field settings both outdoors and inside buildings. Incumbents must be able to climb ladders, lift heavy weights (up to 50 lbs.), and work in cramped, damp, or poorly ventilated areas. Manual dexterity and strict adherence to safety precautions are needed to operate equipment and use tools. Some evening or overtime work may be necessary.


Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent AND three (3) years or more of work experience at or above an apprentice level in building construction, structural maintenance, or automotive, building, or machine repair.


OR


High school diploma or equivalent AND BOTH two (2) years or more of vocational training in building construction, structural maintenance, or automotive, building, or machine repair AND one (1) year or more of work experience at or above an apprentice level in building construction, structural maintenance, or automotive, building, or machine repair.


OR


High school diploma or equivalent AND BOTH two (2) years or more of work experience as a Park Ranger AND one (1) year or more of work experience at or above an apprentice level in building construction, structural maintenance, or automotive, building, or machine repair.
