Job Description

Under direction, is responsible for supervising and participating in the maintenance of recreational and park grounds; performs related duties as required.

(Any one position may not include all of the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all of the duties that may be performed.)

Responsibilities
  1. Supervises a small crew of employees engaged in the maintenance of recreational and park grounds, including performance evaluations, leave requests, and disciplinary recommendations.
  2. Participates in all phases of recreational and park grounds maintenance, such as removing refuse and fallen branches, sweeping sidewalks, painting recreational equipment, cleaning restrooms, filling potholes, raking and mulching leaves, and shoveling ice and snow.
  3. Oversees and participates in the operation and maintenance of light trucks and similar equipment, including tractor mowers, skid steers, packer trucks, trenchers, telescoping material handlers, backhoes, chainsaws, hand and power mowers, stump removers, snowplows, weed eaters, edgers, and various hand and power tools.
  4. Oversees and participates in installing recreational facilities and equipment, such as waterfront facilities, campgrounds, playgrounds, tennis courts, swimming pools, athletic fields, and special event equipment.
  5. Reviews routine records and reports, including mowing schedules, fuel sheets, time cards, and daily work reports.
  6. Completes written reports, such as daily work reports, accident and injury reports, and pesticide application reports.
  7. Schedules, assigns, and monitors park maintenance activities.
  8. Determines tools, equipment, supplies, and materials needed for each park zone.
  9. Trains employees and ensures adherence to proper work and safety procedures, equipment usage, and operating protocols.
  10. Ensures work conforms to OSHA and other safety standards.
  11. May participate in pesticide application to park grounds.
  12. May respond to public inquiries.
Qualifications
  • Two (2) years of experience in landscaping or grounds maintenance work.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license.
  • Possession of a valid Commercial Applicator’s License issued by the Ohio Department of Agriculture may be required for some positions.
  • Possession of a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) may be required for some positions.
Additional Information

The names of applicants passing this exam will be used to create a NEW, OPEN COMPETITIVE eligible list, replacing the current list. To be included, apply within the filing period and complete all testing phases. For questions, contact the Test Center at 614-645-7439.

The exam consists of a computerized test (85%) covering Supervision, Reading Comprehension, Problem Sensitivity, Parks Maintenance, Safety, Planning and Organizing, and Outlook 2016/2019; and a Pre-Trip exam (15%) on Equipment Safety Inspection of a Tractor Mower.

Approved applicants will be notified of their test date and time. All phases must be completed to receive a final score. Passing candidates will remain on the list for two years unless replaced or extended. Consideration for employment includes interviews, a criminal background check, and a pre-employment drug test.

The certification process will be: Fixed Band.
