Job description

I. General Statement of Duties

Performs skilled and unskilled maintenance of the Town’s parks and recreation areas, providing leadership to the maintenance team.

II. Major Duties and Responsibilities

The role involves a range of entry to advanced level tasks, including:

  • Monitoring work progress to ensure safety and timely completion.
  • Leading a crew of full-time and temporary employees, ensuring tasks follow work orders and safety standards.
  • Performing grounds maintenance such as mowing, trimming, fertilizing, planting, and seeding.
  • Handling landscaping tasks including pruning and mulching.
  • Maintaining recreational facilities, playgrounds, and picnic areas, including safety checks, painting, and minor repairs.
  • Preparing sports fields and operating related equipment like tractors, mowers, and blowers.
  • Applying herbicides and pesticides as needed.
  • Driving trucks for supplies pickup.
  • Participating in natural disaster cleanup and assisting with beach access maintenance and holiday decorations.
  • Managing work orders and supervising Community Service Workers.

III. Controls

This position reports to the Parks Maintenance Supervisor and is non-exempt under FLSA, eligible for overtime.

IV. Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Must be capable of performing physically demanding tasks, including heavy lifting, and working outdoors in various environmental conditions, with safety precautions for equipment operation and potential exposure to hazards.

V. Qualifications and Experience

Requires good judgment, knowledge of maintenance methods, safety standards, turf management, and landscaping. Skills in equipment operation, effective communication, and teamwork are essential. Physical fitness for manual labor is required.

Minimum Education and Certifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent, with relevant experience and training in landscaping and turf management.
  • Valid North Carolina driver’s license.
  • NC Pesticide License and Turf and Ornamentals Pesticide License or willingness to obtain.
  • Lift Training Certification.

Additional Certifications

  • Defensive and Distracted Driving, First Aid/CPR/AED, Flagging, Work Zone Safety, Flagger Supervisor, and Leadership certifications.
  • Experience with heavy equipment (front end loader, backhoe, excavator).
  • Certified Playground Safety Inspector (CPSI) and CPRP preferred.

This is a senior role with pay based on experience and qualifications.
