Job summary

The City of New Smyrna Beach Public Works Department is seeking a Landscape Specialist to perform skilled grounds maintenance, landscaping, and pesticide/fertilizer application under supervision. The role requires initiative and the ability to work with Parks Supervisor guidance.

Responsibilities include pruning, turf care, material planning for landscape projects, equipment operation, and event setup. Valid Florida license requirements apply; questions to [e-mail].

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent; three (3) years progressive experience in disease and pest identification preferred.
• Valid Florida Driver's License.
• State of Florida Restricted Pesticide Applicator’s License in ornamental and turf grass required or must be obtained within six (6) months of appointment.
• Complete Temporary Traffic Control (TTC) training through the Florida Department of Transportation within six (6) months of employment and maintain throughout city employment.

Responsibilities

• Coordinates and participates in grounds maintenance across City parks and properties, including landscaping, turf care and general upkeep.
• Prunes trees, shrubs, and perennials; mulching; plant annual beds; select plants based on soil and sun exposure.
• Mow, trim, aerify, verticut, repair turf; water non-irrigated planters; operate water truck as needed.
• Collects and disposes of trash; pressure washes benches, sidewalks, equipment and facilities to maintain cleanliness and safety.
• Apply fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides, fungicides, and growth regulators under supervision; obtain licensed status for independent work.
• Maintain chemical records (MSDS, usage logs, inventory) per safety and regulatory requirements.
• Operate equipment (mowers, tractors, trucks, saws, pressure washers); may trim trees or hang decorations using bucket/scissor lifts.
• Perform minor maintenance on tools; set up materials for events; assist with special projects and safety inspections.
• Oversee NSB Community Garden; may supervise field crew and schedule high-priority maintenance activity.
• Promote a customer-friendly, service-oriented environment for staff and the public.
