Job description

Department:

Parks & Recreation

Reports to:

Irrigation Supervisor

Summary:

Under basic supervision, installs, maintains, and repairs commercial irrigation systems used in the City's parks, sports fields, and landscaped areas for the Parks and Recreation Department.

Essential Functions:

Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. The job description does not constitute an employment agreement and is subject to change at any time by the employer. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  1. Test, repair, and maintain Parks Department water irrigation systems, including electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic components.
  2. Identify and troubleshoot problems with irrigation systems and components, including pumps, valves, pipes, heads, electrical devices, and flow meters; repair and replace components as necessary.
  3. Inspect and diagnose water irrigation management system problems; repair and replace clocks and timer components; adjust irrigation timing system, watering schedule, and area coverage.
  4. Operate vehicles and equipment following safety regulations; identify and report mechanical problems requiring further repair.
  5. Complete daily work logs, incident and accident reports, and requisitions for supplies and materials.
  6. Work on assigned projects, make decisions based on experience, and notify supervisors of repair issues beyond scope.
  7. Inspect irrigation systems installed by contractors.
  8. Maintain plumbing systems in parks and community centers.
  9. Assist with preparation of irrigation plans and specifications.
  10. Use proper safety precautions; report problems and emergencies; recognize and report unsafe acts, conditions, accidents, and injuries.
  11. Support departmental operations with regular attendance.
  12. Interact courteously and cooperatively with visitors and staff; maintain confidentiality; perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:

Education, Training and Experience: High School Diploma or GED preferred. 1 year of irrigation system maintenance experience desired.

Knowledge of:
  • Methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in park maintenance.
  • Design and maintenance practices of commercial irrigation systems and operation of automated irrigation management systems.
  • Materials and standards for installing, testing, maintaining, and repairing irrigation water meters, valves, and control devices.
  • Safety rules, regulations, and codes related to irrigation and plumbing systems.
  • OSHA MSDS for hazardous chemicals.
Skills in:
  • Diagnosing repair problems on automated irrigation systems.
  • Installing, repairing, and maintaining irrigation and plumbing systems safely and effectively.
  • Following safe work practices.
  • Establishing effective working relationships.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
License and Certification:

Texas Driver's License required.

Physical Demands and Working Environment:

Work performed indoors, outdoors, and at City facilities; moderate physical effort required; ability to bend, reach, stoop, lift; potential exposure to hazards and dangerous tools; safety precautions mandatory, including safety shoes.

Salary:

$15.60 per hour
