Parks Equipment Operator I

PAY RANGE DOQ: $17.20 - 27.52/HR

Position Summary:

Semi-skilled and manual work in maintaining landscaped grounds and upkeep of tennis courts. Work is reviewed through oral and written reports, discussion, and results obtained.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The following duties are illustrative and not exhaustive. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position.

  • Performs routine grounds clearing and maintenance: cuts grass with power mowers, including push-type, zero-turn, or tractor mowers; uses string trimmer, edger, hedge trimmer, blower; cleans and maintains grounds maintenance equipment; cuts, hoes, and sprays weeds; plants and maintains flower beds; trims and prunes shrubbery and small trees; rakes leaves and other debris; edges curbs; lays sod or seed as required; loads trash and trimmings onto a trailer or truck; sweeps or blows sidewalks; cleans restrooms and floors; conducts litter removal and emptying trash cans; inspects and repairs irrigation systems; prepares areas for public use.
  • Performs routine tennis court preparation including dragging of clay courts, aerating clay courts, adding clay material as needed, rolling clay courts, removing and replacing tennis nets and net straps as needed, blowing hard courts, squeegeeing hard courts when wet, pressure washing hard courts as needed, check and repair windscreens, check and repair chairs and tables, check fencing.
  • Applies insecticides, herbicides, and fertilizers as required.
  • Informs and assists public in the use of facilities.
  • Performs other job duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of grounds maintenance techniques, practices, and principles.
  • Knowledge of tools and equipment to do related work.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor under varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Skill in the operation and preventative maintenance of equipment and related tools.
  • Ability to learn tennis court maintenance and adapt to weather-related changes.
  • Positive customer service skills.
  • Ability to work well with others or work independently, task oriented.
  • Self-starter, shows initiative, able to follow instructions.
  • Flexible schedule to allow weekend and evening work as needed.

Education and Experience:

  • High school graduation or possession of an acceptable equivalent diploma.
  • Grounds maintenance and tennis facility experience .
  • A combination of education, training, and experience may be substituted at the City Manager’s discretion.

Certificates and Licenses:

  • Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver’s license and must be insurable by the City’s current insurance provider.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • N/A

Emergency Responsibilities:

In the event of an emergency or disaster, an employee may be required to respond promptly to duties and responsibilities as assigned by the employee’s department, Emergency Management or City Administration. Such assignments may be before, during or after the emergency/disaster.
