Job description

NATURE OF WORK:

Supervise and oversee operations of all city parks, city owned facilities, and the cemetery.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Provide guidance and supervision to all employees in the Parks & Recreation, Facilities Maintenance, and Cemetery Department. Assist Public Works Director in the budgeting process. The Supervisor recommends and/or approves department expenditures and specifies equipment, materials, and other related items for capital improvements and daily use. The Supervisor interviews candidates for hiring, and evaluates job performance and is included in the process for determining the level of counseling/reprimands, including firing if necessary. The Supervisor will also provide, and/or oversee, the necessary training for employees, including the training and enforcement of any established safety practices for the department.
  • The Supervisor will occasionally be required to work and converse with various segments of the public, where it applies to parks, recreation and cemetery projects and issues.
  • The Supervisor must be capable of interacting with other City staff to ensure that City priorities are met. The Supervisor will occasionally be involved in resolving disputes and complaints regarding the public. The Supervisor is responsible for establishing and maintaining positive public relations and treats all complainants fairly. In addition, the Supervisor must be able to diffuse volatile situations or mediate disputes.
  • The Supervisor is also responsible for ensuring compliance with City of Vernon Code of Ordinances and any relevant State and Federal agencies or regulations.
  • The Supervisor is responsible for other duties that may be assigned as determined necessary by the Public Works Director.
  • The Supervisor directly oversees all employees in the Parks, Recreation and Cemetery.
