Parks and Recreation Aide 3 (Volunteer Coordinator) - The Emma Treadwell Thacher Nature Center

Description

Under the direction of the Park Manager and supervision of the Environmental Educator 2, the volunteer coordinator will assist with field operations for trail projects and volunteer work. Responsibilities include:

  • Coordinating and recruiting volunteers through outreach to local schools and organizations.
  • Assigning, training, and leading volunteers on trail projects, citizen science initiatives, and environmental education programs and events.
  • Engaging with community and volunteer groups, including trail user groups and Friends of Thacher State Park.
  • Performing hands-on trail work using sustainable techniques, including construction, maintenance, and hazard mitigation.
  • Operating and maintaining tools and equipment.
  • Promoting volunteer opportunities via flyers, social media, and newsletters.
  • Managing budgets, purchasing materials, and maintaining inventory.
  • Supporting the Environmental Education team with programs and other tasks.
  • Performing additional duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications

No minimum qualifications are specified by Civil Service.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience leading volunteers and working in outdoor education.
  • Skills in tool maintenance and trail work, including sustainable practices.
Operational Needs
  • Valid driver’s license to operate a motor vehicle in NY.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work, lift up to 50 lbs, and work outdoors for extended periods.
  • Effective communication skills and organizational ability.
  • Willingness to attend certification courses such as chainsaw safety.
  • Availability to work nights, weekends, and holidays.
