The North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources (DNCR) is seeking a Park Ranger I at Pilot Mountain State Park. The role combines natural and cultural resource management with law enforcement, educational programs, and visitor services.

As a commissioned officer, you will patrol, educate visitors, enforce regulations, and supervise seasonal staff. This role includes a Monday–Sunday rotating schedule and potential housing in some assignments.

Qualifications

Description of Work

The Division of Parks and Recreation is seeking an enthusiastic team member to fill our Park Ranger position. A Park Ranger provides educational programming, natural resource management, law enforcement/emergency services, seasonal employee supervision, administration, operations, and maintenance. The Park Ranger is a commissioned law enforcement officer and will enforce state laws and park regulations through patrol, education, warnings, citations, and arrests.

Key Responsibilities
  • Researching the natural and cultural resources found at the park and developing and implementing resource management plans to include prescribed fire and invasive species removal.
  • Preparing and conducting environmental interpretation and education programming.
  • Performing and directing emergency medical response and emergency rescue in the park and other parks upon need.
  • Assisting with maintenance of park facilities for routine maintenance and minor repairs, as needed.
  • Performing in operations, facility upkeep and/or administration of parks, attractions, other outdoor recreation areas or visitor focused programs.
  • Issuing facility permits, open, and close facilities, and purchasing equipment and/or supplies.
  • May hire and supervise temporary/seasonal employees.

Recruitment Range: $50,000.00 - $54,944.00

Ability to maintain a valid driver's license and meet DOA Fleet Safety Policy and guidelines to drive a state vehicle. Ability to successfully complete various required training for NC State Park Ranger within the required timeframes.

Position/Physical Requirements

Prior to Employment: Selected candidates are required to have successful results in physical and psychological examinations to include drug testing and a background investigation as required by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education, Training and Standards Commission.

Within 18 months of hire date, must have the ability to obtain and maintain a Certification as a Law Enforcement Officer in accordance with the provisions of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission.

Typical work schedule is Saturday to Friday, 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM; includes day, evening, weekends and holiday shift on a rotating schedule. Must work weekends and holidays on-call rotation.

Must have a valid driver’s license issued from within the United States or be able to obtain one within 90 days of employment. Considered Emergency Staff and may be required to work on adverse weather days, during emergencies, and special events. Some positions may have housing available, and it is a requirement that the candidate who accepts the position reside in the housing provided.

Within 12 months of hire date, must have the ability to obtain and maintain: Successfully complete CPR Certification; Successfully complete Wildland Fire Suppression; Successfully complete Division Sponsored S-112 Chainsaw Training.

Within 30 months of hire date, must have the ability to obtain and maintain: Successfully complete Emergency Medical Responder (EMR); Successfully complete Fundamentals of Search and Rescue (FUNSAR).

Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree preferably in Parks and Recreation and/or Natural Science from an appropriately accredited institution. OR Equivalent combination of training and experience.

Necessary Special Qualifications: Certification as a Law Enforcement Officer in accordance with the provisions of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission or the ability to achieve certification within one year of employment.
