Job summary

Kershaw County Parks & Rec is seeking a Park Maintenance Crew Chief to lead daily field operations and supervise crews and contractors, ensuring athletic fields and park facilities are safe, clean, and ready for events.

The role reports to the Park Maintenance Superintendent and emphasizes teamwork, safety, and accountability. Weekend, night, and holiday coverage, plus emergency call-outs, are required to support community recreation needs.

Qualifications

• 3-5 years in parks, grounds, or athletic field maintenance; supervisory experience preferred.
• High school diploma or GED required; associate degree or technical turf training preferred.
• Valid SC driver’s license; playground safety and pesticide certifications preferred.
• Proficiency with mowers, tractors, power tools; irrigation systems; digital work-order/timekeeping platforms.
• Ability to perform heavy physical labor and lift heavy weights.

Responsibilities

• Leads and supervises daily field crew operations to ensure park maintenance tasks are completed professionally and on schedule.
• Ensures athletic fields and park facilities are prepared and safe for games, tournaments, and events.
• Maintains park appearance and safety through regular inspections of grounds, playgrounds, and restrooms.
• Manages equipment and materials inventory to keep tools and vehicles in good condition.
• Fosters staff development and accountability by training personnel on safe work practices and standards.
• Oversees work orders and documentation to track maintenance activities and incidents.
• Monitors contractor performance and special projects for compliance with scopes and safety.
• Coordinates emergency and storm response to restore safety and accessibility after severe weather.
• Addresses resident concerns professionally and maintains positive community relations.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
