Job summary

Job description

Summary

This is a Park Guide, GS-0090-05 position located at Mississippi National River & Recreation Area in St. Paul, Minnesota. The primary purpose of this position is to provide guide services to visitors involving giving talks, and interpreting natural and historic features. Career-Seasonal appointments are permanent positions and include the same benefits as Career appointments, but do not provide work on a year-round basis. You will be in a non-pay status from late February to early March.

Major Duties

At the full performance level (GS-05) the major duties of this position include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Operate the visitor information desk, greeting visitors, providing park and area orientation, information and directions, and answering questions.
  • Determine the needs of a customer by attentively listening to their questions and concerns.
  • Initiate verbal communication with customers in a variety of settings to inform, educate, and/or guide (e.g. patrolling visitor use areas and providing roving contacts to visitors).
  • Conduct basic research of topics appropriate to the park's interpretive themes and presents a variety of formal and informal programs.
  • Operate a variety of audio-visual equipment.
Education

To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work. If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.

Other Information

Physical Demands: The work requires standing for long periods of time, walking for long distances, climbing and descending steep inclines, bending, and lifting moderately heavy items. Mental stress and physical fatigue occur due to high volume of personal contacts, occasional emergency responses, and repetitive nature of interpretive programs Working Conditions: Work is performed both indoors and outdoors resulting in exposure to a variety of weather conditions. The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework only during an emergency or natural disaster.
