Qualifications

• Two-year Associate’s Degree or two-year certificate in EC-related field with demonstrated ability in working with young children and their parents.
• 60 college hours with experience in a program working with young children and their parents as approved by DESE.
• Five years of experience in a program working with young children and their parents as approved by DESE with HS diploma equivalent.

Responsibilities

• Plan, develop, and implement home visits, developmental screenings, group connections, and referrals/resources in Parents as Teachers program.
• Provide personal visits to families prenatal to pre-kindergarten using the PAT Foundation Curriculum.
• Maintain documentation of visits and organize screening materials for successful screenings.
• Plan and conduct parent/guardian group connections and refer families to appropriate resources and community services.

JOB SUMMARY / PURPOSE:

Deliver parent education services to families who participate in the Parents As Teachers Program.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Certification and/or (4) year Bachelor’s and/or Master’s Degree in Early Childhood, Elementary Education, Social Work, Health or Psychology or a related field or a four-year degree as listed in the Early Childhood Development Act (ECDA) preferred and demonstrated ability in working with young children and their parents;
• Two-year (2) Associate’s Degree or two-year (2) certificate, as listed in the Early Childhood Development Act and demonstrated ability in working with young children and their parents;
• 60 college hours with a minimum of two years successful experience in a program working with young children and their parents as approved by DESE as listed in the Early Childhood Development Act and demonstrated ability in working with young children and their parents;
• Five (5) years of successful experience in a program working with young children and their parents as approved by DESE and a high school diploma of equivalent. Refer to the Early Childhood Development Act (ECDA) for additional information.

Upon hiring, successful completion of District funded Certification in Parents as Teachers Foundational Curriculum 1-Prenatal to Three and Foundational Curriculum 2-Three to Kindergarten Entry.

Knowledge/Skills

2. Demonstrate the ability to develop and maintain relationships with young children and their families.
3. Demonstrate organizational and planning skills; oral and written communication skills; and understanding of recent research trends in early childhood.

DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITES

1. Plan, develop, and implement personal visits, developmental screenings, group connections, and referrals/resources provided in the Parents As Teachers program.

   Responsible for providing personal visits to families of children prenatal to pre-kindergarten using the Parents as Teachers Foundation Curriculum.

   Examples of Work Performed:

   • Plan and organize the delivery of a quality home visit utilizing the approved curriculum at the appropriate age of the child.
   • Deliver a quality home visit that includes the components of a visit. (Opening, Parent/Child Interaction, Developmental-Centered Parenting, Family Well-Being and Closing)
   • Maintain appropriate documentation of visits.

2. Responsible for providing developmental screening opportunities for children birth to pre-kindergarten.

   Examples of Work Performed:

   • Demonstrate a working knowledge of screening components and criteria for all screenings administered.
   • Organize all screening materials to aid in a successful screening experience for families.
   • Administer screenings at appropriate age.
   • Explain screening before administration.
   • Explain the results of the screening as it relates to the child’s development.
   • Maintain appropriate documentation of screenings.
   • Encourage families with children 3 to 5 years of age to access Developmental Screening and preschool services, if applicable.
   • Recommend further evaluation if developmental screening indicates a need.

3. Responsible for planning, preparing and conducting parent/guardian group connections according to the criteria set forth by the Early Childhood Development Act.

4. Responsible for referring families to appropriate agencies for needed resources or support.

   Examples of Work Performed:

   • Knowledge of district resources and referral processes.
   • Knowledge of community resources and referral processes.
   • Ability to recognize the need for appropriate referrals.

5. Maintain program quality by accessing personal strengths as they relate to knowledge, skills, and ability to serve families as a parent educator.

   Examples of Work Performed:

   • Effective communication skills.
   • Skilled in observing young children and their developmental milestones.
   • Effective interpersonal skills.
   • Ability to engage and empower parents.
   • Develop and maintain a strong knowledge base in early childhood development.
   • Maintain professionalism in all aspects of the parent educator position.

6. Perform additional duties as indicated by the supervisor.

WORK ENVIRONMENT/CONDITIONS:

The work setting is generally a home environment with various Parents as Teachers families. The work conditions within the home/community site should feature rapport building, observation of children, discussion of parent questions and concerns, sharing of developmental information, and summarizing the visit. The work conditions within the home/community site may also include developmental screenings and referrals/resource connections. The work setting will involve required training, continual yearly professional development, staff meetings, reflective supervision sessions, and group connections at a designated site.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

This positon will use the pay by visit model, as allocated each year. Flexible work schedule, with some flexibility to work from home.
