Parent Organizer for Education Nonprofit

Location: Columbia - Remote within the region; travel required in the designated area and occasional trips to Jefferson City, MO

Compensation: $20/hour, 40 hours per month

Our Mission:

Activate MO is committed to ensuring our communities have authentic parent, student, and educator power to transform public education. By activating a coalition of informed parents, students, and educators from communities across Missouri, we ignite their power to advocate for children by becoming change agents and leaders in education equity. This position involves working with multiple Missouri community schools and organizations to inform and train community leaders by developing their knowledge of governance, power, political dynamics, and systemic barriers affecting their families and communities.

Position Overview:

This is a part-time, remote position that requires travel within the designated area and occasional trips to Jefferson City, MO. As a remote team member, the ideal candidate must be a self-starter who is proactive, highly organized, and comfortable managing their work independently. Success in this role requires someone who can balance flexibility with accountability, stay on top of deadlines, and consistently communicate with a remote team.

While having a child in grades K-12 is valuable experience, we also encourage candidates who are deeply passionate about education reform and advocacy to apply.

Key Responsibilities

Parent Outreach and Engagement

  • Recruit and engage parents and students from diverse backgrounds in school activities, advocacy efforts, and community initiatives.
  • Build meaningful relationships with families through in-person meetings, community events, and virtual interactions.
  • Act as a bridge between parents and schools, helping families navigate educational systems and policies.
  • Maintain records of parent engagement, feedback, and participation in events to track impact and inform future efforts.

Organizing and Advocacy

  • Organize and facilitate parent meetings, workshops, and forums to discuss educational issues and develop action plans.
  • Lead advocacy campaigns on key topics such as curriculum development, school funding, and student safety.
  • Collaborate with community organizations, elected officials, and education stakeholders to advance policies that benefit students.

Education and Training

  • Provide parents with resources and information about child development, education policies, and school systems.
  • Conduct workshops on effective advocacy strategies and ways to support student learning at home.
  • Train parent leaders to facilitate discussions and organize smaller community groups.

Data Collection and Analysis

  • Gather and analyze data on parent engagement, student achievement, and school climate to shape advocacy efforts.
  • Identify trends and areas of concern to develop targeted strategies for community impact.

Collaboration and Communication

  • Partner with school administrators, teachers, and community organizations to strengthen parent engagement initiatives.
  • Communicate key information to parents through newsletters, social media, and direct outreach.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to engage diverse communities.
  • Experience in community organizing, advocacy, or grassroots mobilization.
  • Knowledge of child development, education policy, and school systems.
  • Ability to facilitate group discussions and lead workshops effectively.
  • Bilingual skills may be required depending on the community.
  • Bachelor’s degree in education, social work, community development, or a related field preferred.
