Job summary

Camas School District is seeking a Paraprofessional for High Needs 1:1 classroom support in its special education programs. The role collaborates with teachers to assist students in accessing both regular and special education activities.

The assistant will help implement IEPs, adapt materials, and support behavioral plans while ensuring safety and inclusivity in a dynamic school setting. This is a 190-day position with prorated pay based on FTE.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent and 72 quarter/48 semester credits OR AA/AS degree.
  • Complete the Fundamental Course of Study and General Certificate per state guidelines.
  • Experience with special needs students in an educational setting.
  • Demonstrated academic proficiency.
  • Sign language knowledge preferred.
  • MS Office and database entry skills.
  • Acquire first aid/CPR certification.
  • Training in the use of physical restraints.

Responsibilities

Days: 190 Days (August 24, 2026 - June 17, 2027 - pay is prorated by FTE and days worked in the contract year)
Salary: $25.36 - $31.53

Position:1004981

Purpose: In coordination with the classroom teacher and special services staff provide 1:1 and/or small group assistance in the self-contained or other specialized programs offered through special services to support students' potential to access regular and special education programs and academics.

  1. Implement specialized and / or adaptive procedures and curriculum materials as instructed by the teacher.
  2. Prepare and utilize appropriate materials for use with students.
  3. Implement individual education plans (IEP) as designated.
  4. Provide for the physical needs of students which may include catheterization, bathrooming, diapering, handling body fluids, lifting, and transferring students.
  5. Maintains appropriate records as instructed by the teacher or other special services staff.
  6. Collect and record student data. Provide progress reports to teacher.
  7. Support and implement behavioral plans with students.
  8. Assist with the adaptation of classroom materials.
  9. Facilitate independent working, social, and self-help skills.
  10. Provide first aid to students as needed in an emergency.
  11. Provide physical restraint as needed.
  12. Other related duties as assigned to support the success of the students and the classroom.

  1. High school diploma or equivalent AND 72 quarter/48 semester credits OR AA/AS degree OR pass the state exam for paraprofessionals.
  2. Instructional paraprofessionals, as defined by the state per WAC 179-01-020, are required to complete the Fundamental Course of Study and General Certificate per the state guidelines.
  3. Experience working with special needs students in an educational setting.
  4. Demonstrated academic proficiency comparable to assigned grade and subject areas.
  5. Basic knowledge of sign language preferred.
  6. Basic computer skills to include MS Office software and database entry.
  7. Acquire and maintain first aid/CPR certification.
  8. Acquire and maintain training in the appropriate use of physical restraints.
  1. Stand for long periods of time.
  2. Stoop, bend, walk, run.
  3. Work in noisy environments.
  4. Physically assist students.
  5. Able to lift up to 50 pounds.

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: Generally, the job requires 10% sitting, 50% walking, and 40% standing. The job is performed in a generally clean and healthy environment.

Benefits: School Employee Benefit Board (SEBB) Eligibility determination: All eligibility determinations are based on rules in Chapters 182-30 and 182-31 of the Washington Administrative Code (WAC). If the position is anticipated to work a minimum of 630 hours in a school year, then that position would be deemed benefit eligible. SEBB benefits include medical, vision, dental, long-term disability and life insurance. Supplemental coverages are also available.

Retirement Eligibility determination: A certificated position participates in the Teacher Retirement System (TRS) which requires at least 5 months of 70 or more hours of compensated employment during a school year to be eligible for Washington State Retirement. A classified position participates in the School Employee Retirement System (SERS) if the position is expected to require at least 5 months of 70 hours or more for two consecutive years (initially) of employment.

Paraeducators hired into High Needs positions may be reassigned to different High Needs programs (such as ICP, ISL, IAP, or ISEL) within their assigned building as student and facility needs evolve.
