POSITION DESCRIPTION

Title: Paraprofessional (Special Education)
Reports To: Principal and Director of Special Education or Designee
FLSA Status: Nonexempt
Summary: The 1:1 Paraprofessional provides individualized instructional, behavioral, social, and personal support to a student with disabilities in accordance with the student's Individualized Education Program (IEP), behavior intervention plan, and school division policies. The paraprofessional works under the direct supervision of a licensed teacher and collaborates with school staff to promote student independence, academic achievement, and social-emotional growth. Works with the classroom teacher to achieve established instructional objectives and goals for special needs students.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Other duties may be assigned.

1. Provide one-on-one instructional support to the assigned student under the supervision of a licensed teacher.
2. Assists the teacher with all classroom activities and routines.
3. Assist students with personal care tasks such as using the lavatory, changing clothes when needed and feeding.
4. Assists with preparing class displays and bulletin boards.
5. Assist students, individually or in groups, with assignments to reinforce learning.
6. Assists the teacher with duties relating to supervision of students in varied settings.
7. Escorts students as assigned by the teacher or administration.
8. Assist students with mobility issues.
9. Participate in all training sessions required.
10. Assist the student in developing self-regulation, social skills, and independence.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

1. At least two years of study at an institution of higher education, Parapro Pathways Assessment, or
2. Obtained an associate's or higher degree; or
3. Met a rigorous standard of quality and can demonstrate, through a formal academic assessment, knowledge of and the ability to assist in instructing reading, writing and mathematics.
4. Experience working with students with disabilities.
5. Training in behavior management, de-escalation techniques, or special education practices.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
General knowledge of the practices and techniques used in working with special needs students. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to students.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand. The employee frequently is required to walk; use hands to finger, handler or feel; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to sit, reach with hands and arms and taste or smell. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision and ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
Ten-month employment. Salary Range $25,194 to $39,050
EVALUATION
Performance of the position will be evaluated annually in accordance with the provisions of the Prince Edward County School Board's policy on evaluation of classified personnel.
