POSITION SUMMARY: Assist the teacher with the care and management of students.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Follow the teaching procedures used by the teacher, the teacher's schedule of activities, the continuity of academic progression and the materials and equipment available
  • Work with individual students or groups of students to reinforce instruction or skills initially introduced by the teacher
  • Collaborate with the teacher and service providers in devising strategies for reinforcing material or skills based on an understanding of individual students, their needs, interests, and abilities
  • Assist with classroom activities
  • Assist in preparing and maintaining learning areas, equipment, materials, and facilities
  • Assist students in such daily tasks as putting on and taking off outerwear, moving from room to room, using equipment, using the lavatory arrival and departure, snack, lunch, playground and clean up
  • Operate teaching aids, i.e., SMART Boards, computers, student assistive technology, etc.
  • Alert the teacher regarding any problems or special information about a student
  • Provide escort and assistance to children as necessary
  • Assist with supervision of children
  • Assist with clerical responsibilities assigned by the teacher
  • Participate in professional development opportunities when appropriate
  • After proper training, assists with health-related procedures such as, but not limited to, feeding, tube feeding, lifting, positioning, carrying, toileting and cleaning of intermittent catheterization and suctioning
  • Assist with crisis intervention according to inserviced techniques
  • Maintain ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students
  • Follow supervisory chain of command
  • Maintain consistent attendance to support studentsPerform other duties as assigned by the teacher or coordinator including serving para staffing needs throughout the program

ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to bend, twist and lift school supplies and equipment ancillary to the instructional program
  • Ability to routinely lift up to 25 pounds and to assist with lifting a child's weight
  • Knowledge of procedures to support physical needs of students with medical conditions

BASIC REQUIREMENTS – Level 1:

  • High school graduate
  • Experience, or known ability to work with all children in a caring manner

BASIC REQUIREMENTS – Level 2:

  • 60 hours of college credit; an emphasis in Early childhood coursework is preferred, but not required
  • Experience working with children in a caring manner

EQUIPMENT USED:

  • Standard office equipment

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Paraprofessionals, who do not hold teaching certificates, are required to have received initial orientation, plus fifteen (15) clock hours of training during their first school year of employment. A minimum of ten (10) clock hours each year thereafter is also required
  • Paraprofessionals will be reimbursed for these hours of training outside of schedule work time
  • Work in a variety of locations, travel throughout the district, work non-traditional hours which may include evenings and weekends and meet the physical demands of handling a variety of student needs
  • While performing duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, talk, hear, walk, stand, and reach
