Paraprofessional II - Special Education
Job Summary:

Under the direction of the Principal or an assigned Supervisor, assist a certificated teacher in reinforcing instruction to individual or small groups of students with moderate to severe special needs assigned to a designated special education classroom; tutor individual or small groups of students; perform a variety of support activities related to the behavior management of assigned students; assist in the preparation of instructional materials; assist students with performing academic, daily living, vocational and special health care activities as assigned; provide routine clerical support.

Distinguishing Characteristics:

The Paraprofessional II-Special Education position is assigned to a designated more restrictive special education classroom or learning environment. Incumbents provide instructional assistance and assist individual or small groups of students with moderate to severe special needs. Positions are distinguished from the Paraprofessional I-Special Education, by the greater difficulty and complexity of assigned tasks, and a wider scope of responsibilities involving more physical, self-help and special health care treatment activities in the performance of daily activities.

Education and Experience:

Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school or equivalent GED and some experience working with children in a learning or organized setting. Incumbents must meet requirements specified under every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). In addition, must meet on of the following:

  • Completed at least two years of study at an institution of higher education (48 units);
  • Obtained an associate’s or higher degree (college level); OR
  • Met (pass) a rigorous standard of quality and can demonstrate, through a formal State or local academic assessment, knowledge of, and the ability to assist in instructing, reading, writing, and mathematics.
Other Licenses and Requirements:
  • Valid First Aid and CPR certification within a probationary period.

Examination and Interview Process:

Candidates who successfully pass application screening will participate in the following competitive recruitment testing phases, as applicable based on minimum qualification status:

  • Written Examination: Candidates who do not meet the educational minimum qualifications will be required to complete a paraprofessional equivalency examination. This multiple choice examination is administered on a continuous basis, typically once per month.
  • Panel Interview (Required): All candidates who meet the minimum qualifications, or who successfully pass the paraprofessional examination, will be required to participate in a panel interview. Panel interviews are conducted on an ongoing basis, typically twice per month.

Qualified candidates will be notified of specific testing and panel interview dates.

Requests for alternate or rescheduled testing or interview dates will not be granted.

Candidates are expected to be available for all scheduled components of the recruitment testing process.
