Job summary

UNC Health Rex Holly Springs Hospital is seeking a Paramedic to provide rapid assessment and treatment in the Emergency Department. You will perform patient assessments, obtain vital signs and ECGs, initiate IV access, and administer medications under physician direction, while supporting nurses and providers during procedures.

You will monitor patients, communicate changes to the care team, document care, and assist with triage, transport, and safe transitions of care.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • OEMS approved training & NC Paramedic Certification required.
  • BLS, ACLS and PALS certifications required.
  • Six months pre-hospital Paramedic experience.

Responsibilities

  • Takes directions from nurse, physician and/or advanced practice provider to implement prescribed therapies within scope of practice.
  • Provides rapid evaluation of presenting patients and communicates to the care team the patient’s needs.
  • Identifies clinical priorities and initiates action to improve patient outcomes.
  • Maintains a safe, therapeutic and healing environment and acts as a patient advocate.
  • Communicates effectively to promote sharing of information.
  • Utilizes triage skills to assist in prioritizing of incoming ED patients.
  • Performs basic data collection, prepares patient for exam and communicates findings to nursing staff.
  • Facilitates blood draw and starting of IVs in coordination with nursing.
  • Works to their paramedic license; does not give narcotics or perform intubations.
  • Transports patients via wheelchair or stretcher as needed.

Responsibilities may include performing patient assessments, obtaining vital signs and ECGs, initiating IV access, administering medications and treatments under physician direction, assisting with airway management and resuscitation, responding to trauma and medical emergencies, and supporting nurses and providers during procedures. ED Paramedics also help monitor patients, communicate changes in condition to the care team, document patient care, and assist with patient flow and safe transitions of care.

ED Paramedics also help monitor patients, communicate changes in condition to the care team, document patient care, and assist with patient flow and safe transitions of care.

The Rex Holly Springs Hospital Emergency Department provides a full range of emergency care to you and your loved ones. It is home to 24 patient beds, two major resuscitation rooms and a full staff of emergency professionals.

Shift: 1:00p - 1:00a, rotating weekend and holiday requirement.

Summary

Works as a member of the Emergency Department clinical team. The paramedic collaborates with a multi-disciplinary team to provide appropriate age specific care in compliance with standards of practice in the hospital or urgent care setting. The paramedic will provide care to patients under the supervision of the Registered Nurse and Physician. A physician will provide oversight for clinical practice. Skill set approved by NC-OEMS will be utilized.

Responsibilities

Takes directions from nurse, physician and/or advanced practice provider to implement prescribed therapies within scope of practice.

Provides rapid evaluation of presenting patients and communicates to the care team the patient; 1⁄2s required needs/care.

Identifies clinical priorities and initiates action to improve patient outcomes based on these priorities.

Maintains a safe, therapeutic and healing environment through ensuring patient privacy and responsive, respectful, accepting and professional behavior.

Acts as a patient advocate.

Communicates effectively to promote sharing of information.

Utilizes triage skills to assist in prioritizing of incoming ED patients.

Performs basic data collection, prepares patient for exam and communicates findings to primary and/or charge nurse.

Facilitates blood draw and starting of IVs based on orders and in coordination with primary/triage nurse.

Works to their paramedic license; does not give narcotics or perform intubations.

Transports patients via wheelchair or stretcher as needed throughout facility.

Performs other duties as assigned by management.

Education Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
Licensure/Certification Requirements
  • Completion of OEMS approved training & competency program for Paramedic and current North Carolina Paramedic Certification required.
  • Certification in BLS, ACLS, PALS.
Professional Experience Requirements
  • Six months experience in a pre-hospital environment as a Paramedic required.
Knowledge/Skills/and Abilities Requirements
  • Incumbent must demonstrate the ability to understand, communicate and react effectively and appropriately to the unique needs of neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients. Incumbent must demonstrate clinical competence per the position’s Skills Checklist before being allowed to perform independently.
