Overall Objective Of Job

The Paramedic's primary responsibility is to provide advanced emergency medical care for critical and emergent patients who access the emergency medical system. The Paramedic must possess the complex knowledge and skills necessary to provide patient care and transportation. The Paramedic, through recognized standards of care, continued education, system-developed standard operating guidelines, and compliance with medically sound policies and procedures, must be able to properly assess the scene, accurately interrogate and assess the patient, and provide the demanded standard of professional care. The Paramedic plays a pivotal role in providing comfort, aid, and all levels of life support to all patients who require pre-hospital care. The Paramedic must acknowledge that no two patients are alike and some clinical presentations may not rise to the level of life-saving intervention. It is the duty of the Paramedic to deploy compassion and empathy during all perceived emergencies and to provide thorough and complete care.

Essential Functions Of Job

1. Maintain a constant state of readiness and fitness for duty, including completion of vehicle and equipment inventories and operation checklists. Report deficiencies to management and participate in mitigation or correction.
2. Drive corporate vehicles to and from specified locations following instructions from the emergency medical dispatcher, adhering to all safety standards and traffic laws.
3. Ensure a zone of safety upon arriving at the scene, securing the vehicle, and mitigating hazards or reporting them to promote safety.
4. Conduct thorough assessments of patients, deploy prescribed treatments per protocols, and advocate for patient rights and wellbeing, demonstrating competency with medical equipment.
5. Provide complete reports to receiving facilities, including clinical presentation and interventions, and complete documentation as required.
6. Ensure equipment and vehicle are returned to readiness after patient care, including restocking and decontamination.
7. Work as an engaged team member, promoting a positive attitude, learning, and communication, and coordinate with other emergency responders as needed.

Other Duties Of Job

• Attend meetings, training, and seminars as required.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Supervision Received

Receives occasional instruction and supervision from the Station Supervisor, District Chiefs, and Administration.

Supervision Given

Occasional instruction to EMT crew members.

Working Conditions

• Indoor or outdoor work in varying weather conditions.
• Exposure to noise, stress, dust, dirt, and contaminants, including bloodborne pathogens.
• Work beyond normal hours or on an as-needed basis.
• Work in cramped spaces requiring physical effort.
• Use of protective gear and adherence to safety protocols.

Physical/Mental Conditions

Must meet physical demands such as standing, walking, lifting, bending, kneeling, climbing, reaching, pushing, pulling, handling, and grasping, often in adverse environments and emergency situations. Mental resilience to handle stress and maintain professionalism is essential.

Qualifications

High school diploma or GED required; associate degree preferred. Valid Pennsylvania State Paramedic certification, BLS, ACLS, PALS, and other relevant credentials required. Minimum 1 year EMS experience preferred. Valid PA Driver License and background clearances required.
