The United States Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia is distinct among United States Attorney's Offices due to the breadth and scale of its work. It acts as both the local and the federal prosecutor for the nation's capital. Locally, it handles cases ranging from misdemeanor drug possession to murders, while federally, it handles cases ranging from child pornography to gang, financial fraud, and terrorism. The Office also represents the district in civil suits.

To be eligible for a recent graduate appointment, ALL of the following requirements must be met:

  1. Recent Graduates must have obtained a qualifying degree or certificate from a qualifying accredited educational institution within the previous 2 years unless military service interfered with eligibility. Veterans meeting this exclusion may apply within 2 years of discharge or 6 years from the date of receipt of the degree, whichever comes first.   2. Recent graduates must be U.S. citizens or owe permanent allegiance to the U.S. (Note: natives of American Samoa, Swains Island, and certain inhabitants of the Northern Mariana Islands are the only groups owing permanent allegiance).
  3. You must successfully complete a background investigation to determine your suitability for Federal employment.
  4. All recent graduates are required to sign a Pathways Recent Graduate Participant Agreement.
  5. Recent Graduates serve a trial period for the entire duration of their excepted service appointment.
  6. Qualification requirements as outlined below:

To qualify for the Paralegal Specialist GS-07 position, you must have:

  1. Either one year of specialized experience at the GS-5 level in federal service; or
  2. One full year of graduate-level education (related field); or
  3. Superior Academic Achievement; or
  4. A combination of education and experience.

Specialized experience includes performing paralegal or legal work such as legal research involving criminal prosecutions, assisting with examining and processing legal documents, conducting research, drafting legal documents, using filing systems, and reviewing legal references or case files.

OR

Graduate-level education demonstrating the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for the position, accredited by a recognized institution.

OR

Superior Academic Achievement, such as being in the upper third of the class, having a GPA of 3.0 or higher, or membership in a scholastic honor society.

OR

A combination of education and experience that together meet 100% of the requirements.
