Purpose

This role supports the Legal Department in advising Operations, Sales, Compliance, and other business units on a broad range of legal matters involving retail annuities, pension-risk transfer group annuity contracts, and structured settlement annuities.

Responsibilities include providing legal support for new business processing, contract administration, claims handling, structured settlement transactions, and other operational matters related to these products. The position involves conducting legal research, analyzing statutory and regulatory requirements, reviewing legal and business documentation, and providing recommendations to attorneys and business stakeholders. The role also requires interpreting court orders, settlement agreements, and qualified assignment documentation, while ensuring compliance with applicable federal and state laws. Success in this role requires strong analytical and research capabilities, attention to detail, and the ability to collaborate across departments while managing a high volume of time-sensitive matters with accuracy and professionalism.

Accountabilities
  • Under direction of supervising paralegal: General Legal Support Review, investigate, and respond to legal referrals and inquiries from Operations, Sales, Compliance, Product Development, and other business units.
  • Perform legal research and analysis of statutory, regulatory, contractual, and general business matters, and summarize findings.
  • Review settlement documentation related to structured settlement annuities and confirm compliance with Internal Revenue Code.
  • Interpret legal decisions and analyze legal documents, including contracts and correspondence.
  • Support cross-functional initiatives and provide guidance on legal issues impacting annuity products.
  • Assist with implementation of process improvements and best practices.
  • Maintain legal reference materials, including 50-state surveys.
  • Produce accurate, high-quality work while managing multiple matters.
  • Build and maintain effective working relationships across the organization.
Qualifications and Experience
  • 3+ years of relevant experience in legal research, paralegal support, legal operations, or a related legal environment, including experience reviewing and interpreting legal documents, conducting research, and analyzing information to support attorneys or business partners

  • Strong legal research and analytical skills with the ability to make decisions based upon legal research in a timely manner, including but not limited to: Interpret legal decisions, including examining and processing a variety of legal documents.
  • Conduct research, analysis and evaluation of data in response to complex or sensitive requests or other legal documents and correspondence.
  • Search and review legal references, case files, and other sources for information and data required by attorneys.
  • Demonstrate strong work ethic with attention to detail, along with a high degree of professional ethics and integrity.
  • Self-motivated with an ability to work independently on projects with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to multi-task, effectively prioritize, and manage all matters and assigned tasks in a timely manner.
