Responsibilities

  1. Assist attorneys in reviewing case material, including gathering and analyzing case data, and preparing digests of decisions/opinions with legal references. May review work of Legal Clerk/Paralegal II.
  2. Examine, evaluate, and process new and complex cases based on facts and standards.
  3. Assist in establishing probable cause by reviewing investigative reports, determining the need for further evidence, and planning information gathering. Advise attorneys on case strengths, weaknesses, and defenses.
  4. Conduct legal research using various tools, public records, and databases to prepare cases and identify causes of action. Interview law enforcement officers regarding probable cause, evidence, and witnesses.
  5. Support pretrial preparations by organizing discovery, preparing summaries, and managing witnesses.
  6. Assist in settlement discussions and prepare related legal documents.
  7. Draft legal pleadings, motions, and proposed orders.
  8. Manage files, documents, and exhibits efficiently.
  9. Summarize depositions, interrogatories, and testimonies to aid attorneys.
  10. Utilize databases and software to generate reports, charts, and trial exhibits.
  11. Provide training to team members as needed.
  12. Perform additional duties as assigned.

Requirements

  1. Paralegal Certificate with at least one year of experience, or a High School Diploma/GED with at least three years of paralegal experience.
  2. One year of automated litigation support experience, with knowledge of legal technology tools.
  3. Knowledge of forfeiture law, policies, and procedures; trial experience preferred.
  4. Strong legal research and analysis skills.
  5. Excellent oral and written communication skills, including legal writing.
  6. Strong organizational and prioritization skills.
  7. Proficiency with Microsoft Office and legal databases.
  8. Commitment to excellent customer service, adaptability, and ability to multitask.
  9. Ability to work in a team and maintain professionalism under pressure.

This position requires U.S. Citizenship and a background investigation of 7 or 10 years.

The United States Attorney's Office (USAO) prosecutes criminal and civil cases involving property used or acquired during illegal activities. The Asset Forfeiture Section handles related cases.
