Shasta County seeks a County Counsel Paralegal – Confidential (Paralegal I or II) to support the County Counsel office. You will perform legal research and draft and review documents under supervision, assisting with civil and legislative matters.
Two levels available (I or II) with related experience; the position may require court appearances and coordination of calendars. This role offers comprehensive county benefits and opportunities for professional growth.
County Counsel Paralegal – Confidential (Paralegal I or II) provides paraprofessional legal support under close or general supervision of attorney staff for the County Counsel office, including legal research, drafting and reviewing legal documents, and assisting with civil and legislative matters.
Paralegal I‑Confidential: $4,309 – $5,500 approximate monthly, $24.86 – $31.73 approximate hourly.
Paralegal II‑Confidential: $4,774 – $6,093 approximate monthly, $27.54 – $35.15 approximate hourly.
Paralegal services for County Counsel and attorney staff; researching legal issues and reviewing statutes, ordinances, case law, and legal articles; drafting pleadings, briefs, appeals, petitions, complaints, answers, and declarations; reviewing and summarizing deposition and hearing transcripts; drafting ordinances, resolutions, leases, contracts, and amendments; providing technical support for civil law projects such as codification of County ordinances; preparing public hearing notices; calendaring and tracking real estate transactions; assisting with legislative tracking and history reports; coordinating schedules and meetings; organizing litigation and non‑litigation files; maintaining document control; appearing in court in a support capacity; and performing related duties as assigned.
Knowledge of: legal research methods, civil procedure, legal writing, court processes, document drafting, office methods, computer applications, proper English usage, and training/supervision principles.
Ability to: maintain confidentiality, follow complex directions, gather information and prepare reports, research and apply legal principles, organize large amounts of data, communicate orally and in writing, draft legal documents, adopt effective courses of action, exercise sound judgment, manage workload, operate personal computers, maintain cooperative relationships, and follow safety policies.

Incumbents must also comply with the mandatory continuing education requirements defined by the California Business and Professions Code.
Regularly required to sit, use hands, talk or hear, reach, and occasionally stand, walk, climb, lift up to 10 pounds and sometimes up to 25 pounds. Work is primarily office‑based with occasional court travel and occasional exposure to outside weather.
Employees in this classification are covered under the CalPERS retirement program with available formulas (2% at 55, 60, or 62) and contributions up to 9.5% of pay. Additional benefits information is available on the County employee benefits page.
