Summary Of Job
The Charging Unit of the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office is a 24/7 operation which is responsible for reviewing all arrests and affidavits of probable cause in support of arrest warrants and search warrants in Philadelphia submitted by the Philadelphia Police Department and other law enforcement agencies. Charging Unit ADAs determine when charges are filed or declined in a case and whether probable cause exists for the issuance of arrest and search warrants. They along with Charging Unit Paralegals and DA Representatives are responsible for making bail recommendations, handling bail appeals from arraignment court, and the creation of files following arraignment court.
Due to the essential nature of this role, lateral transfers will not be considered until at least a year of service has been completed.
Work schedules are shown below:
- Evenings from Monday through Friday, 3pm-11pm
The Charging Unit paralegals are considered essential personnel and must work holidays and other times the office is closed based on the schedule.
Job Responsibilities
- Create charging packets for live arrests sent to the PARS charging queue by PPD.
- Run background checks for each defendant through CPCMS and the PS Portal XL (NCIC).
- Order Certificates of Non-Licensure from State Police.
- Print Police Misconduct Disclosure Packets from DAWS.
- Communicate with PPD for any outstanding paperwork (ex. Crash reports, FOJ paperwork).
Skills & Qualifications
- Prior experience as a paralegal is a plus.
- All qualified applicants must have earned a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university.
- Able to work with minimal supervision, able to multi-task well and manage time efficiently.
- Candidates must be organized, flexible and capable of working under pressure.
- Prior experience with CPCMS, PARS and DAWS is a plus.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications is desirable.
- Ability to develop and cultivate effective internal/external working relationships is essential.
- Understanding of the uniquely sensitive and confidential nature of the professional services provided by the Office.
