Job summary

The Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community (SMSC) Legal Team is seeking a seasoned Paralegal to support governance and high-level legal tasks in a fast-paced environment. You will work directly with Legal Counsel, assist with board minutes, resolutions, and presentations, and manage complex matters with an emphasis on confidentiality and accuracy.

Qualifications

• Paralegal certification from an ABA-approved program preferred.
• 5+ years of Paralegal experience.
• Proficient with Microsoft Office and video conferencing software; comfortable with multiple databases.
• Ability to read, draft, analyze statutes, caselaw, legal documents and pleadings.

Responsibilities

• Provide high-level administrative support to the SMSC Tribal Government legal team.
• Develop, implement, and maintain a formal matter management system.
• Receive, delegate, prioritize, and monitor legal tasks with oversight from the Deputy General Legal Counsel.
• Assist with Tribal Business Counsel and Gaming Enterprise Board minutes, resolutions, and presentations.
• Maintain attorney calendars and ensure complete information for all matters.
• Collaborate with internal clients to resolve legal matters promptly and effectively.
• Maintain and file Tribal Government legal records.

Job Overview: Responsible for performing advanced, diversified and confidential legal support duties for SMSC Tribal Government. This position will be responsible for high-level matter management, including assisting the Deputy General Legal Counsel in receiving, delegating, prioritizing, and monitoring legal tasks; assisting with governance tasks, including Board minutes, resolutions, and presentations; conducting independent legal research and analysis; and performing special projects. This position will also provide general administrative support such as responding to legal inquiries and correspondence and filing legal documents.

Create Your Path: The Work You’ll Do:

Job Requirements:

• Paralegal certification from an ABA-approved paralegal certification program preferred.
• 5+ years of Paralegal experience.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office applications and virtual meeting software; comfortable navigating multiple databases and systems.
• Ability to read, draft, analyze, and interpret common statutes and caselaw, legal documents, and pleadings.
• Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in oral and written form with all levels of management.
• Detail-oriented, good problem-solving skills and organization skills, ability to manage multiple priorities within time constraints. Project management experience preferred.
• Ability to build partnerships and collaborate across the organization.
