Job summary

Armed Forces Benefit Association (AFBA) and 5Star Life in Alexandria, VA seeks an entry-level paralegal to join the law department and provide legal research, writing, and organizational support. You will assist with memos, document review, compliance reporting, and project coordination with internal clients and outside counsel.

Ideal candidates have a paralegal degree or certificate, strong research/writing skills, and the ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.

Qualifications

  • Paralegal degree or 2-year certification/associate’s degree.
  • Proficiency with Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Outlook.
  • Strong research and writing skills.
  • Experience with LexisNexis, Westlaw or NILS.
  • Strong written and verbal communication.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Familiarity with LinkSquares, SharePoint and Concur Expense is helpful.

Responsibilities

  • Research legal issues and summarize findings.
  • Prepare memos and letters from research and initial analysis.
  • Review, proofread and edit documents, forms and reports.
  • Track legislative histories and changes affecting AFBA/5Star Life.
  • Attend client meetings as needed.
  • Research corporate structures and prepare related reports.
  • Conduct due diligence reports as needed.
  • Assist with document retention reviews and compliance programs.
  • Prepare compliance reports and support governance reporting.
  • Assist with compliance projects and manage law department projects.
  • Review and improve law department processes and procedures.
  • Manage legal databases and electronic communications.
  • Perform administrative duties for legal folders and binders.

General Description

This position will perform various legal research, writing, reporting, and other duties at the request of the attorneys in the law department. Managed by the Deputy General Counsel or General Counsel, this position provides legal support and assistance to law and, when necessary, compliance business units. This role plays an important part in ensuring efficiency and timely responses from law to their clients and will work with law and internal and external business partners as needed to protect the organization’s interest from a legal perspective. This position is expected to be able to interact confidently and effectively with various levels of management and non- management within the organization. This is an entry level to early career position.

Essential Paralegal Duties and Responsibilities

The paralegal will perform a variety of tasks depending on the needs of the legal and compliance departments. These tasks may include but are not limited to:

  • Researching various legal issues and summarizing their findings
  • Preparing memos and letters based on research and initial analysis
  • Reviewing, proofreading and editing documents, forms and reports
  • Tracking case and statutory changes and reporting on changes that affect AFBA or 5Star Life Insurance
  • Attending client meetings- as needed.
  • Researching legislative histories.
  • Researching corporate structures and when necessary, prepare reports on the same.
  • Conducting due diligence reports as needed
  • Assisting with document retention review projects and ensuring continuing compliance with the company’s document retention program.
  • Preparing compliance reports and assisting with company governance and yearly reporting requirements
  • Assisting with compliance project as needed
  • Managing law department projects and ensuring timely completion of the same
  • Reviewing current law department process and procedures and when appropriate suggesting improvements to the same.
  • Managing legal databases, electronic mail and other media utilized by the law department.
  • Performing administrative duties such as filing and organizing legal folders, binders, etc.
  • All other duties as assigned.
Education

The ideal candidate will have completed a Bachelor’s degree and/or obtained a two-year certification/degree in paralegal studies.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
  • Paralegal degree or two-year certification/associate’s degree
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Microsoft Outlook
  • Ability to rationalize, analyze and think critically about legal issues and scenarios.
  • Possess strong researching and writing skills
  • Knowledge of and experience with legal research databases (Lexis-Nexis, Westlaw, NILS etc.)
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills required.
  • Possess sound judgment and have the ability to juggle multiple tasks in a fast-pacedenvironment.
  • Familiarity with the LinkSquares contract management system, SharePoint, and the Concurexpense management system, helpful but not required.
  • Be detailed oriented with the ability to grasp difficult legal concepts and issues
  • Willingness to take on assignments as directed and to capably manage one’s time and workschedule
Desired Qualifications
  • 2-4 years’ experience working as a paralegal in an in-house environment preferred
  • Possess knowledge of the life insurance industry or be willing to learn
