TITLE

Paraeducator – Special Education

PAY AND BENEFITS

6.5 hours per day / 196 days per year (includes 11 paid holidays)

$25.59 - $29.62 per hour, dependent upon previous years of experience

Employees (and their families) are eligible for medical, dental, vision, and basic life insurance benefits, as administered by the School Employees Benefit Board (SEBB). Final benefit eligibility to be determined at time of hire. Employees receive a VEBA benefit contribution, up to $105 per month, provided by the district. Employees are eligible to enroll in the Department of Retirement Services (DRS) SERS plan (classified employees) or TERS plan (certificated employees), as well as the DRS Deferred Compensation Program. Employees receive sick leave, personal leave, and paid holidays as outlined in the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).

DESCRIPTION

The Special Education Paraeducator performs a variety of support to the special education program, providing services to students with a variety of disabilities ranging from mild to moderate developmental disabilities to severe and profound in the areas of speech, motor, social, behavioral, academic, and cognitive skills. The program may offer instruction focusing on modified curriculum, which may include a combination of the following: functional academics, daily living, behavior and social skills, and independent living skills. Responsibilities vary with the individual assignment, but may include instruction of students, monitoring student behavior, student hygiene, classroom housekeeping, and preparation of materials, testing, and data collection and reporting. Paraeducators work under the day-to-day direction of the staff member(s) supported and under the direct supervision of the Principal. Teachers and/or educational staff associates provide specific directions and oversight for supervision and/or instructional support.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Greet visitors, parents, students, and staff in a welcoming manner.
• Assist certificated staff in the implementation of plans related to IEP program development, functional behavior assessments, behavior intervention, and activities related to communication and OT/PT IEP goals.
• Assist certificated staff with creation of necessary educational materials to enable student progress student progress toward IEP goals and objectives.
• Assist certificated staff in collecting relevant data for evaluating student progress
• Assist students with daily living activities (e.g. personal hygiene, meal preparation, household chores).
• Provide behavioral interventions for students when needed.
• Administer first aid, medical assistance, and/or address healthcare needs, including personal hygiene and toileting assistance when necessary.
• Monitor students, across educational settings, to provide a safe and positive learning environment, including facilitating necessary accommodations and modifications to curriculum, materials, and schedules.
• Escort students to and from bus loading/unloading areas, lunchroom, and other areas for the purpose of providing safe transport to various locations.
• Supervise individuals and/or groups of students in a variety of settings including field trips, playground, classroom, hallways, lunch room, to ensure a safe and positive learning environment.
• Accurately assess situations and remain calm during emergencies or stressful situations.
• Provide cross-training to other CNP staff as required and essential for this position.
• Maintain student discipline in accordance with the classroom and school-wide discipline plans.
• Build positive relationships with students, staff, and families and contribute to a positive school climate.
• Operate according to professional and ethical standards at all times. This includes maintaining a high degree of confidentiality, courtesy, cooperation, positive attitude, reliability, punctuality, accuracy, and efficiency.
• Arrive to work on time and maintain regular and consistent attendance, adhering to work schedule.
• Participate in team meetings for the purpose of collaborating and sharing information.
• Attend relevant training to acquire and maintain up-to-date knowledge of specific job responsibilities.
• Perform other duties as assigned by administrator(s), as applicable to this position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Be at least 18 years of age
• High school diploma or equivalent
• Received a passing grade on the Education Testing Service's Paraeducator Assessment; or
• Hold an Associate of Arts degree; or
• Have earned 72 quarter credits or 48 semester credits at an institution of higher education.
• Valid Washington State Driver’s License
• Criminal Justice/Fingerprint clearance

WORKING CONDITIONS

The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands: Sitting or standing for prolonged periods of time, kneeling, stooping, pulling, pushing, reaching, and handling; moving quickly in response to situations of potential danger to students and/or staff; ability to lift up to 50 pounds; restrain students, when necessary, using district approved techniques; and working outdoors and in inclement weather.
