This position supports student achievement by providing, under the direction of the Director, Special Education, and under the direction and indirect supervision of certificated staff, specialized assistance to instruct pupils individually or in groups in accordance with prescribed learning objectives; assisting a teacher or administrator in establishment and maintenance of appropriate classroom and site behavior; performance of medical treatments and procedures necessary in providing specialized physical health care in-services to pupils with exception needs; and acting as a paraprofessional assistant to a teacher in performing assigned tasks.
Any combination of training and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience:
One year paid experience providing related health care services. Completion of 30 college semester units in nursing or other appropriate health-related field may substitute for six months of the required experience.
Education:
High school diploma or GED; and Academic proficiency requirements in ONE of the following ways:
Licenses/Certifications
If you are attempting to satisfy the academic proficiency requirement, official college transcripts must be attached to the application to validate the degree awarded or completion of 48+ college units. If official transcripts are not attached to the application, you will be required to take and pass the academic proficiency assessment in addition to the job-specific examination for this position.
Foreign degrees and credit units require translation and equivalency established by an agency recognized by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.

Work Schedule:
This position typically works part-time, 5.75 hours or 6.50 hours per day depending on position availability, and observes the student calendar. Potential for more hours is in accordance with employee seniority standing and position availability.
Examination:
The examination component consists of a qualifying multiple-choice exam and structured oral interview exam. Applicants meeting the minimum qualifications will be required to take the exams and are notified via email communication of the scheduled date, time, and location. A valid picture identification is required prior to admittance.

After the exam procedure concludes for this recruitment, an eligibility list will be established to fill future vacancies. When eligibility lists include open and promotional lists of qualified persons through competitive examination, the promotional list will be used first, unless otherwise stated in this bulletin.
Salary:
The initial salary rate for a new employee is at the first step of the appropriate salary schedule for the position. The probationary period is 130 work days (not counting sick, industrial accident). Upon becoming permanent, a one-step salary advance shall be granted with future annual advances up to the fifth step of the salary schedule.
Working Conditions:
Indoor/outdoor environment. Exposure to temperature swings in climate-controlled indoor environments and outdoor environments when walking between buildings or to vehicle and offices; potential exposure to bloodborne pathogens, bodily fluids from students; exposure to various noises from classrooms, office equipment/machines, students and employees.
Physical Demands:
40 lb. lifting/carrying weight requirement. Some sitting, walking and standing for extended periods of time; bending; stooping; pushing, pulling, reaching; lifting or moving students - may use a multi-person lift or use of mechanical lifting equipment; see and hear in normal visual and audio range with or without correction.
