This is a Continuous Recruitment forMonthly & Substitute Opportunities for Paraeducator-Independence Facilitator-Medically and Physically Challenged (PIF-MPC)

BASIC FUNCTION:
The Paraeducator-Independence Facilitator-Medically and Physically Challengedassists individuals or small groups of students to enhance learning including providing academic support, behavior intervention, and medical support to students in classroom settings, including Medically and Physically Challenged (MPC) settings. Assists teachers with instruction and classroom management that occurs in special education and general education classrooms, lunchrooms, play environments, including distance learning and field trips.
  • Positions work 35 hours per week, 10 months per year.
    • Positions 20 hours per week or more qualify for District Paid health and wellness benefits for employees and eligible dependents.
  • The starting hourly rate is $23.53 per hour.
  • You must be available to work in person Monday-Friday.
  • The shift time is offered within the school bell schedule.
This recruitment will be used to establish an ongoing eligibility list for current and future hiring purposes. Additionally, successful candidates will be offered the opportunity to substitute. REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:(Incumbents may perform any combination of the essential functions shown below. This position description is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all duties, knowledge, or abilities associated with this classification, but is intended to accurately reflect the principal job elements.)

  • Provides physical assistance to assigned students in a variety of classroom, physical education, recreational, and other activities; physically positions students, as necessary; properly lifts non-ambulatory students to and from wheelchairs and/or appropriate positions in adaptive equipment; assists and encourages ambulatory students to engage in regular education activities; assists in providing physical and occupational therapies, as directed. E
  • Under the direction and in-service instruction of a licensed nurse, provides care and assistance to meet the medical needs of students, some of whom may be medically fragile; administers medication as directed and required; operates specialized medical equipment for assigned students; ensures student safety during seizure(s), according to established procedures, guidelines, and requirements; complete required documents with medical information.   • Ensures assigned students receive adequate nutrition; assists students to develop feeding/drinking skills and encourage proper nutritional habits, as needed; monitors assigned students to ensure that nutrition, allergy, and other related limitations are carefully complied with during meal/snack times; may assist in regular and/or special meal preparation, as assigned. E
  • Assists individuals or small groups of students to enhance learning including providing academic support, behavior intervention and medical support to students in classroom settings. Assists teachers with maintaining a productive classroom environment in special education and general education classrooms, lunchrooms, play environments, including distance learning and field trips. E
  • Provides support, strategies and techniques to students or small groups in order to facilitate independence, self-reliance, and integration into the classroom setting. E
  • Assists one or more students with the understanding of learning materials and instructional exercises.
  • Assists with lessons and other classroom activities such as projects, small group exercises, and independent study. E
  • Assists individual students or small groups with classroom projects and special assignments. Organizes materials and supplies to facilitate use by assigned students, assists students requiring help; offers positive feedback and alternatives. E
  • Works in collaboration with the classroom teacher, reinforces instructions in support of the student’s learning and/or behavioral objectives. E
  • Reviews Individual Education Plans prior to beginning of school year and confers, as needed, with teachers and Special Education staff concerning student needs. Alerts teacher or other appropriate staff to any special problems or information concerning students. Assists teachers and resource staff to implement individual and group educational goals and objectives. Reports data collected to teacher and specialists as assigned. E
  • Assists and guides students by using appropriate role modeling, emotional support, patience, and friendly, engaging attitude. Implements behavior management programs and positive behavior supports. E
  • Works toward fading prompting and other supports to increase student independence. E
  • Assists in maintaining order among assigned students on school grounds, including off campus classroom activities, gathering areas, field trips, and special events. E
  • Assists teacher in the performance of their duties and in the supervision of students in instructional tasks which, in the judgment of the certificated personnel to whom the paraeducator is assigned, may be performed by a person not licensed as a teacher, which may include supervising students in the absence of the classroom teacher. The teacher shall retain responsibility for instruction and supervision of students in their charge. These duties shall not include assignment of grades to students (Ed Code Section 45343 & 45344). E
  • May assist with loading and unloading of assigned students onto buses, or with lunches and snacks.
  • Assures safety of students following health and safety rules. E
  • Lift and move designated students with proper supports as necessary in the use of bathroom facilities, including changing diapers and clothes, cleaning, and providing personal hygiene care. E
  • May assist students with personal hygiene matters, which could involve assisting with bathroom facilities.
  • Under the direction of the school nurse, may perform specialized health care procedures including but not limited to catheterization, gastric tube feeding, suctioning or other services as identified in the individualized education, individualized health support, or 504 plan of the student. E
  • Provides assistance to therapist(s) in mobility therapy programs; clean and make minor adjustments to wheelchairs, special equipment, and toys; may prepare specialized materials and equipment for use in the special education or general education classroom. E
  • May handle or launder soiled materials.
  • Operate a computer and assigned software programs; operate other office equipment as assigned.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.



EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
A passing score on the San Diego Unified School District Classroom Assistant Proficiency Exam (CAPE)
or
Associate's degree (or higher) or 48 or more eligible units of coursework at a recognized college or university. Completion of post high school courses in Psychology, Early Childhood Development, Elementary Education, Special Education, or related field is desirable.

One year of experience working with severely, emotionally, mentally, and/or physically challenged children in an organized setting. Completion of post high school courses in Psychology, Early Childhood Development, Elementary Education, Special Education, or related field is desirable.

Foreign Equivalency Certification:
Individuals who have completed high school or college-level coursework at an institution in a country other than the United States must provide a Foreign Equivalency Certification to satisfy the education requirement. ELIGIBLE LIST AND SUBSTITUTE POOL:

The Eligible List will be used to fill vacancies at various sites. Additionally, qualified candidates will be invited to be processed for placement on the Substitute Pool for this position.
