Job summary

The Getty Research Institute’s Conservation and Preservation Department seeks an Associate Paper Conservator/Paper Conservator to oversee examination and treatment of paper-based artefacts in preparation for exhibitions. This full-time role will contribute to planning, installation, and research, collaborating across departments and with interns and staff.

Responsibilities include creating comprehensive conservation documentation, improving standards for handling and shipping, and mentoring

Qualifications

• MA in conservation or equivalent degree; 5–6 years experience for Associate level, or 7–10 years for Paper Conservator.
• Authorization to work in the United States without employer sponsorship.
• Demonstrated abilities in examination, analysis, documentation, and treatment of paper-based artefacts.
• Experience with exhibition preparation and collaboration across teams.

Responsibilities

• Plan and install exhibitions; examine and treat paper-based objects for exhibitions.
• Perform conservation treatments to high current standards and document conditions.
• Advise on handling, storage, packing, and shipping of collections.
• Collaborate with curators, archivists, registrars, and staff on projects.
• Publish and present research; may do outreach and education to audiences.
• Potentially supervise interns, staff, contractors, and provide training.
