Job summary

Job description

Responsibilities

• Regular attendance at work and the ability to work flexible hours, including overtime, weekends and holidays.
• Comply with company, Federal, State, and local safety, ethics, and environmental rules, regulations and policies while performing duties.
• Resolve issues with regard to day-to-day operations.
• Responsible for meeting production schedule, maintaining resources and training needs within the Dept.
• Provide technical assistance and oversee the workforce in the Material Processing Dept.
• Inspect finished products from Material Processing to ensure they meet the specifications and standards set by the Company.
• Manage the procurement and inventory of raw material in order to meet the needs of production.
• Confer with Production/General Mgr. and other Superintendents to coordinate work schedules and prioritize work.
• Monitor work performance and productivity.
• Manage employees and plan ahead to have their crew work safe.
• Coordinate the material requirements for all Company facilities to meet production needs.
• Oversee all incoming and outgoing material between yards.
• Monitor the removal of scrap metal from Company property.
• Research a variety of equipment parts and coordinate with vendors as needed.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities

• Directly and/or indirectly supervise employees assigned to the Material Processing Dept.
• Interview, hire, and train employees; plan, assign, and direct work.
• Travel is primarily local during the business day, although some out-of-area and overnight travel may be required.

Requirements

Education & Experience

• High school diploma or GED equivalence plus five to seven years’ previous shipyard experience desired.
• Must be able to manage a crew of individuals to get the job done efficiently, effectively, and safely.
• Three to five years’ supervisory experience desired.
• Knowledge of the equipment in Material Processing, including CNC plasma machine, press brake, and wheelabrator, etc.
• Requires knowledge of ship terminology, safety, OSHA, and ABS regulations.
• Requires general knowledge of blasting and painting, fitting and welding.

Skills

• Basic to intermediate level computer skills.
• Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and written.
• Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from management, supervisors and employees.
• Apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
• Read and understand blueprints.
• Knowledge of safe operation and use of hand and power tools.
• Perform basic arithmetic (add, subtract, multiply, divide) in all units of measure.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to communicate. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle or feel, and reach with hands and arms. This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, and climbing throughout the workday. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. The employee must be physically and medically qualified to wear all required personal protective equipment, as prescribed under Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards. The employee must be able to work above ground at heights of a minimum of 50 feet aloft and/or working from scaffolding and/or man-lifts while working with machinery; in confined spaces and withstand extreme heat and cold in an outside climate or confined space.
