The University of Maryland School of Medicine is seeking an academic palliative medicine physician to join our expanding interdisciplinary program. The position offers considerable flexibility to develop a clinical portfolio aligned with the candidate’s interests and expertise. Opportunities includeinpatient palliative medicine consultation, ambulatory palliative care, and medical leadership of our growing General Inpatient (GIP) hospice program, with the opportunity to serve asGIP Hospice Medical Director. The successful candidate may focus primarily in one area or develop a blended role across these clinical settings. Protected time for teaching, quality improvement, program development, and research is available.

Our palliative medicine program is undergoing significant clinical expansion across the continuum of serious illness care. Faculty have opportunities to participate in the continued development of inpatient consultation, ambulatory palliative care, and hospital-based GIP hospice services.We welcome candidates with different career interests and will work with the successful applicant to create an individualized role that draws on their clinical, educational, scholarly, and leadership strengths.

The Division of Gerontology, Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine resides in the Department of Medicine and is comprised of a team of 5.5 MDs, an NP, an RN manager, dedicated Clinical Pharmacist, Chaplain, and Social Worker, in addition to full-time Program Support and a Business Administrator. The members of the team serve as expert palliative consultants to the UMMC’s multi-disciplinary service teams, adding an extra layer of support to patients and their families.

Strengths of program, as validated by independent consultants are:

Staff: Multidisciplinary and highly motivated staff

Supported by: Physician directors of our Medical and Surgical ICUs; Shock Trauma Center Director; Hospital Chief Medical Officer and Nursing leadership; Chairs of Internal and Family Medicine.

Quality: Routine collection of operational data; project integration with Medical ICU

Research: Strong foundation and support exists for grant funding to further interdisciplinary Palliative Medicine research.

Expected faculty rank for all positions is at the rank of Assistant Professor or higher, however, final rank, tenure status and salary will be commensurate with candidate’s qualifications and experience.

The referenced salary range represents the minimum and maximum salaries for this position and is based on the University of Maryland School of Medicine’s good faith belief at the time of posting. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. The actual compensation offered to the selected candidate may vary and will ultimately depend on multiple factors, which may include the successful candidate's geographic location, skills, work experience, internal equity, market conditions, education/training and other factors, as reasonably determined by the University.

Qualifications

This position requires a medical degree from a recognized accredited domestic university (or foreign equivalent) and all candidates must meet the requirements to obtain a medical license in the State of Maryland. Successful candidates will be board certified/eligible in Palliative Medicine. A strong foundation in internal medicine, teaching and research or quality improvement experience is preferred.
