Job Description

Rincon Consultants, Inc. is seeking an as-needed Paleontological Field Technician who will provide paleontological mitigation support throughout California. The role involves conducting paleontological monitoring on construction sites, including preparation for sustained monitoring in various climates and ecologies. Although listed for the Los Angeles region, this position is available statewide.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Perform construction mitigation monitoring for paleontological resources
  • Collect detailed and accurate field data focusing on geology and stratigraphy; prepare clear daily monitoring reports
  • Collect fossils during monitoring, assist with fossil salvage, including plaster jacketing or bulk sampling
  • Clean, organize, and prepare fossils for curation
  • Work under the guidance of a qualified paleontologist
Qualifications:
  • BA or BS in geology, paleontology, or a related field, including education and field training in paleontology and sedimentary geology
  • Experience with California paleontology, including monitoring, survey, fossil salvage, lab prep, report writing, and coordination with paleontologists
  • Ability to perform fieldwork safely on rough terrain and in inclement weather for extended hours
  • Strong communication skills, responsiveness to supervisors, ability to follow detailed instructions, and good organization
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation for travel to sites
  • Proficiency with technology, including smartphones, computers, or tablets

The hourly rate for this temporary position ranges from $25.00 to $35.00, based on market data and individual experience.
