Position Focus
Provide painting services throughout the University including minor repairs to walls, interior and exterior surfaces, paper hanging, and preps paint for all surfaces. This position is directly responsible to provide ongoing daily training, review and evaluation for all aspects of the Painting Trade and fulfillment of the Yale University Painter Training Program. Works closely with supervisor(s) on all three campuses to ensure successful transition, knowledge and experience growth from lower labor grade painter trainees through to journeyman level painter equivalent.
Essential Duties
- Performs assignments under limited supervision. 2. Trains, reviews and directs the work of employees under the direction of the supervisor. 3. Provides training and review of L35 Painter Trainees (e.g. LG5, LG7, LG9) within the three (3) year Yale Painter Training program. 4. Under the direction of the supervisor, assumes general responsibilities for the training program, implements and provides recommendations regarding classroom and practical application testing. 5. Under the direction of the supervisor, assumes general responsibility for the completion of assignments. 6. Determines the manpower and material requirements and the means and methods to be used in accomplishing work assignments. 7. Secures materials/ supplies and equipment. 8. Mixes and/or matches colors required for job as needed. 9. Has skill set to spray paint, walls, ceilings and clear finishes used on doors and furniture 10. Makes minor repairs to puttied windows and doors with normal glass. 11. Prepares and paints surfaces such as wood/ metal/ plaster and sheetrock. 12. Hangs wallpaper. 13. Strips trim, doors and furniture and is also capable of refinishing furniture. 14. Sets up scaffold as required in compliance with all safety guidelines. 15. Maintains clean work area and/or clean job site. 16. Observes all safety standards and practices always. 17. Directs and trains lower labor grade employees, and sometimes equal labor grade. 18. Performs related duties as required or assigned within job classification.
Required Education And Experience
- High School diploma or equivalent. 2. Journeyman Level Painter with six (6) or more years of painting trade experience.
Required Skill/Ability 1
Trains, reviews and evaluates L35 Painter Trainees and Painters of all Labor Grades.
Required Skill/Ability 2
Ability to read, write and follow written and verbal instructions. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Required Skill/Ability 3
Portrays excellent attention to detail and exemplary customer service skills and/or willingness to assist and/or work with others. Demonstrated regular, reliable, and predictable attendance.
Required Skill/Ability 4
Must be able to interrelate with fellow employees as needed to get the job done. Must treat fellow employees, students, staff and visitors to the University with respect.

Ability to accurately and visibly identify color match before repainting.
Required Licenses Or Certifications
- Must have Driver’s license valid in the State of Connecticut. 2. Must hold a valid Connecticut OSHA 10 certificate. 3. Journeyman Level Painter with ten (10) or more years’ Training experience.
Physical Requirements
- This is a maintenance position requiring physical exertion. Ability to lift, move and carry furniture, equipment, trash /debris and other trade materials up to 50 pounds without assistance and within the normal capacity of the job. 2. Ability to climb a ladder and/or scaffolding as dictated by job requirements and safety standards. 3. Ability to climb and descend stairs, stoop, bend, and/or squat. 4. Ability to work in confined areas. 5. Frequent stooping, bending, sustained work while kneeling and/or squatting. 6. Works inside and outside in all types of weather and temperatures. 7. Moves both arms and shoulders in full and extended motion while working with heavy tools, equipment and materials. 8. Ability to perform sustained work while bending over and repeatedly lifting materials. 9. Drives to assigned work areas. 10. Sustained overhead work. 11. Performs work in dusty and dirty environments.
