Job summary

The University of Washington Housing & Food Services is seeking a skilled Painter to join their team in Seattle, WA. You will perform journey-level painting duties, including surface preparation, priming, finishing, and patching under the supervision of Maintenance Supervisor 2.

Responsibilities include painting walls, ceilings, trim, repairing surfaces, and maintaining tools. This is a full-time, on-site role emphasizing safety, documentation, and teamwork with helpers and students.

Qualifications

• Completion of a recognized apprenticeship as a painter; OR four years of applicable work experience.
• May require valid State of Washington driver’s license.
• Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and/or registration.

• Paint walls, ceilings, trim, and other surfaces using brushes, rollers, and spray equipment.
• Tape and finish drywall joints.
• Prepare, finish, and refinish woodwork, cabinetry, and floors.
• Operate and maintain hand tools, power tools, spray equipment, power washers, ladders, scaffolding, and other work platforms.
• Load, unload, transport, and manage shop materials and supplies.
• Drive vehicles as required.
• Maintain work logs, records, and related documentation.
• Provide guidance, instruction, and training to helpers, students, and other painters as assigned.
• Support efficient project completion through communication, teamwork, and customer service.
• Perform related duties as required.

About this Opportunity

Reporting to Maintenance Supervisor 2, the Painter is responsible for performing journey-level duties in skilled painting work.

Key Responsibilities

Surface Preparation, Painting & Finishing (60%)

• Prepare surfaces for painting and finishing by scraping, sanding, washing, and removing old finishes, rust, dirt, and grease.

• Patch, fill, caulk, and restore surfaces to ensure a quality finished appearance.

• Identify and address surface deficiencies prior to painting or refinishing.

Equipment, Materials & Operational Support (15%)

• Operate and maintain hand tools, power tools, spray equipment, power washers, ladders, scaffolding, and other work platforms.

• Clean, maintain, and store tools and equipment.

• Load, unload, transport, and manage shop materials and supplies.

• Drive vehicles as required.

• Maintain work logs, records, and related documentation.

• Provide guidance, instruction, and training to helpers, students, and other painters as assigned.

• Support efficient project completion through communication, teamwork, and customer service.

• Perform related duties as required.

Required Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

• Completion of a recognized apprenticeship as a painter; OR full journey status as a painter in a union; OR four years of applicable work experience. Vocational training may be substituted for work experience on a year-for-year basis. May require valid State of Washington driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working directly with customers or clients

• Experience working in a multi-tenant residential or university environment

• Experience with Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel

• Experience and references that demonstrate:

• Ability to read, write and communicate verbal instructions in English

• Ability to work with a diverse workgroup

• Ability to coordinate work with other trades

• Ability to work under general supervision where work is carried out independently and evaluated on results achieved.

• Ability to use the Internet, email and basic computer applications
