Description of Duties

· Prepare surfaces for painting or finishing by scraping, sanding, washing, or otherwise removing dirt, grease, old finishes, and rust scale; remove paint from surfaces by using sanders, wire brushes and paint and varnish removers.
· Paint walls, and trim with latex and oil-based paints using best practices and methods.
· Apply primers, sealers, stains, and undercoats with brushes, rollers, or spray-painting equipment
· Make minor repairs in plaster, sheetrock, metal, wood, and masonry surfaces by filling with putty, caulks or Spackle.
· Apply texture material to walls and ceilings
· Tape and flush smooth sheetrock joints using trowels, taping knives and other taping equipment.
· Prepare and finish or refinish woodwork, cabinetry, and floors.
· Capable of wearing a respirator when required.
· Work with airless spray guns, power rollers, and power-wash equipment.
· Clean brushes, rollers, spray and other painting equipment with water, solvent, thinner, or other appropriate cleaners to keep tools in good working condition.
· Operate hand and power tools
· Install and work from ladders, scaffolding and other work platforms.
· Coordinate services with HFS Facilities Services and Planning staff and other units, including Physical Plant.
· Maintain work logs and records.
· Drive service truck as required; load and unload materials and supplies.
· May lead or instruct helpers or other painters as required.
· May train students or helpers in skilled painting techniques and best practices.
· Perform related duties as required.


Minimum Qualifications

· Completion of a recognized apprenticeship as a painter; OR full journey status as a painter in a union; OR four years of applicable work experience. Vocational training may be substituted for work experience on a year-for-year basis. May require valid State of Washington driver’s license.

Desirable Qualifications
· Experience working directly with customers or clients
· Experience working in a multi-tenant residential or university environment
· Experience with Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel
· Experience and references that demonstrate:
• Ability to read, write and communicate verbal instructions in English
• Ability to work with a diverse workgroup
• Ability to coordinate work with other trades
• Ability to work under general supervision where work is carried out independently and evaluated on results achieved.
• Ability to use the Internet, email and basic computer applications.

Conditions of Employment

· A satisfactory outcome from the employment verification and reference check processes.
· Possession of a valid Washington State Driver’s License upon hire and maintenance thereafter.
