Essential Functions

• Performs painting preparation to assure quality paint application.
• Operates painting or coating tools on assigned equipment to improve appearance and customer satisfaction.
• Straightens body panels and fenders, fills small dents, files, grinds, sands, and smooths repaired surfaces.
• Sandblasts areas to be painted and covers bumpers, windows, and trim with masking tape or paper for protection.
• Primes and paints repaired surfaces with care and detail using applicable manufacturer paints and standards.
• Maintains the paint booth and painting equipment, keeping it clean and in safe working order.
• Performs light mechanical work to replace parts such as handles, hinges, panels, etc.
• Removes and applies equipment decals, performs final checks on assembly and installation of parts replaced.
• Controls labor costs at or below quoted flat rates to achieve departmental goals.
• Completes necessary paperwork daily for timely invoicing.
• Maintains company property and resources, ensuring cleanliness and minimizing expenses.
• Completes special projects as requested by the department supervisor.
• Maintains and completes daily/monthly usage or material consumption reports required for EPA/OSHA; obtains and maintains MSDS information records for all products.
• Disposes of hazardous waste appropriately and keeps equipment and work areas in good, clean, and orderly condition.
• Works overtime as required by workload and customer needs.
• Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities.
• Works safely at all times, adhering to all applicable safety policies and company procedures.
• Requires regular and punctual attendance.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• General knowledge of tools, equipment, methods, materials, and terminology used in the paint trade.
• Knowledge of safety procedures related to paints, solvents, glues, tools, and equipment.
• Basic knowledge of estimating, planning, and controlling cost of repair jobs.
• Proficiency with current computer software, related hardware, and machine electronic systems.
• Skilled in applying paints and finishes by brush or spray gun.
• Quality control analysis skills for testing and inspecting products, services, or processes.
• Operation and control skills for operating equipment or systems.
• Equipment selection skills to determine the kinds of tools and equipment needed.
• Ability to operate a forklift and an overhead crane.
• Ability to quickly and repeatedly operate controls of a machine or vehicle to exact positions.
• Ability to use hand tools, power tools, pneumatic tools, and equipment used in mechanical repair.
• Fine motor skills to manipulate very small objects.
• Reading, writing, and comprehension abilities.
• Listening and understanding skills for spoken information.
• Ability to learn the more complex aspects of the paint trade.

Requirements

Education and Experience

• Three or more years of experience in painting and/or body work in automotive or similar shop environment preferred.
• High school diploma or equivalent preferred; associate degree or technical training from an accredited vocational school strongly preferred.

Physical Requirements

• Must be able to move objects and use abdominal and lower back muscles to provide support over time without fatigue.
• Frequently moves materials or equipment weighing up to 80 pounds.
• Constant movement and use of limbs; requires good manual dexterity, coordination, and stamina.
• Ascends/descends ladders and/or equipment without assistance.
• Can maneuver safely and work underneath equipment.
• React to visual, auditory, and other signals, including alarms and instructions, and visually inspect work.

Work Environment

• Works indoors in non-controlled environmental conditions, around moving mechanical parts, unfavorable fumes and odors, and hazardous chemicals.
• May be exposed to weather extremes when working outside.
• Exposed to sounds and noise levels that are distracting or uncomfortable.
• Exposed to contaminants, small quantities of chemicals, dust, steam, high-pressure water, and high-speed rotating equipment.
• Requires wearing specialized protective or safety equipment.
• Required to perform work in cramped spaces and/or high places.
• Requires precise or highly accurate work.
