Job Description

Position Title: Painter

Reports To: Director of Maintenance

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Position Summary:

Under general supervision, performs skilled journey-level painting and finishing work on school district buildings, facilities, and equipment. Applies protective and decorative coatings to interior and exterior surfaces while maintaining high standards of workmanship, safety, and efficiency. Assists other maintenance personnel as needed and performs related duties as assigned.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The following duties are representative of the position. Additional responsibilities may be assigned.

  • Prepare interior and exterior surfaces for painting by cleaning, sanding, scraping, pressure washing, patching, caulking, filling holes, masking, and priming.
  • Apply paint, stains, varnishes, enamels, lacquers, sealants, and other protective or decorative finishes using brushes, rollers, and spray equipment.
  • Match paint colors and finishes to existing surfaces as needed.
  • Paint classrooms, offices, hallways, gymnasiums, cafeterias, athletic facilities, playground equipment, parking lot markings, signs, curbs, and other district property.
  • Erect, use, and safely remove ladders, scaffolding, lifts, and related equipment.
  • Operate and maintain paint sprayers, pressure washers, sanders, sandblasters, power tools, and other maintenance equipment.
  • Estimate labor, materials, and supply needs for assigned projects.
  • Maintain accurate records of work performed, materials used, and inventory.
  • Transport painting equipment and supplies to district facilities.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
  • Communicate effectively with school administrators and staff regarding maintenance projects and scheduling.
  • Assist other maintenance personnel as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

The successful candidate should possess knowledge of:

  • Methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in commercial and institutional painting.
  • Surface preparation techniques.
  • Paint mixing, color matching, and finishing methods.
  • Safety practices, including OSHA standards and proper handling of paints, solvents, and chemicals.
  • Proper operation and maintenance of painting equipment.

The successful candidate must demonstrate the ability to:

  • Perform skilled painting work with minimal supervision.
  • Read and interpret work orders, blueprints, and manufacturer's specifications.
  • Safely operate hand and power tools.
  • Prioritize multiple assignments and meet deadlines.
  • Maintain accurate records.
  • Work cooperatively with supervisors, coworkers, school personnel, students, and the public.
  • Follow written and oral instructions.
  • Exercise sound judgment and professionalism.
Physical Requirements

The employee must regularly:

  • Stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb, and reach overhead.
  • Lift and carry up to 75 pounds; occasionally lift heavier materials with assistance.
  • Work from ladders, scaffolding, and aerial lifts.
  • Use repetitive hand movements and manual dexterity.
  • Work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Be exposed to paint fumes, dust, solvents, cleaning chemicals, noise, and other environmental conditions associated with maintenance work.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum of four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in commercial or institutional painting or completion of a recognized apprenticeship or vocational training program.
  • Experience operating commercial painting equipment preferred.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Valid South Carolina Driver's License with an acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to maintain district vehicle eligibility requirements.
Employment Requirements

The selected candidate must:

  • Successfully complete all district employment requirements.
  • Pass a criminal background check and any other screenings required by the School District of Williamsburg County.
  • Meet all requirements established by district policy and applicable state and federal laws.
Working Conditions

Work is performed in both indoor and outdoor environments throughout the school district. Duties may require exposure to weather extremes, dust, fumes, paint products, chemicals, noise, and other conditions typical of maintenance operations.
