Job description

Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s ( LBNL ) Facilities Division has an opening for a Painter to join the team.

As a member of the LBNL’s Facilities Division, you will be an integral part of our specialized Painter team, supporting the Lab’s ongoing scientific experiments, as well as day to day operations. In this exciting role, you will prepare surfaces by priming, cleaning, scraping, sanding, sealing and water blasting, in the support of construction and maintenance activities.

You will also perform paint applications which include: matching colors utilizing a tinting machine, applying paint colors, oils, etc., to obtain proper color or consistency. As a Painter, you will use brushes, rollers, spray equipment to apply paints, varnishes, epoxies and other paint-like substances to interior/exterior building structures, utilities, equipment, cabinet / furniture.

Perform all work safely and comply with LBNL and DOE (Department of Energy) safety policies. Have the ability to communicate and interact with a variety of staff in a diverse work environment.

What You Will Do:

• Use brushes, rollers, pads and spray equipment to apply paints, varnishes, epoxies and other paint-like substances to interior/exterior building structures, utilities, equipment, cabinets/furniture.
• Prepare surfaces by cleaning/scraping/sanding/sand blasting. Patch/fill surfaces and blemishes.
• Erect scaffolds/work platforms; cover contents within/around the work site.
• Perform work from verbal and written instructions and sketches.
• Perform a competitive quantity of work promptly and with minimum supervision.
• Communicate effectively in writing and orally.
• Understand all aspects of injury reporting in order to support Division responsibilities.
• Must use protective clothing, safety equipment and respirators.
• Comply with LBNL implementation of DOE health and safety policies and other applicable Federal, State, and local fire, health, safety, emergency-preparedness, pollution-prevention, and environmental-protection policies.
• Perform all work safely and be particularly aware of potentially hazardous operations or conditions.
• Immediately stop work in the event of danger to people or property and notify the appropriate supervisor and, when appropriate, the building manager and when appropriate the Environmental Safety Hazards Control Department.
• Report promptly and correct when appropriate any hazardous conditions that are discovered.
• Proceed with work only after having ensured that appropriate safety procedures have been implemented.
• Plan work with full consideration to safety.

Additional Responsibilities as needed:

What is Required:

• Journey level experience in commercial/industrial painting.
• Must have a valid California Driver’s license.
• Able to climb stairs, ladders, scaffolds, work at heights; work in confined spaces, around rotating equipment, under florescent lights; able to bend, stoop, kneel, crawl, have manual dexterity in both hands; lift 50 lbs. to chest height, able to distinguish colors and use color codes.
• Ability to communicate clearly over telephone and two-way radio.
• Demonstrated ability to use computers effectively for record-keeping and communication;
• Proven planning, prioritization and organizational skills.
• Excellent time management skills and ability to manage multiple projects at once.

Desired Qualifications:

• Experience taping drywall.
• Knowledge of LBNL facilities layout, key personnel, procedures governing stores issues, safety program and facilities design requirements. All will be required after employment.

Notes:

• This is a full-time, career appointment, non-exempt (hourly paid)
• This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
• The Painter is expected to pay a set rate of $56.50/hourly for the job classification of 960.3.
• This position is subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
• Work will be primarily performed at: Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
