Job summary

Coastal Carolina University is seeking a Creative Graphic Designer (Student Assistant) to shape the visual appearance of The Chanticleer print newspaper. The role collaborates with editors, participates in layout, typography, and graphics, and supports both print and digital products using InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop.

The position emphasizes visual storytelling, coordination with staff, and timely production while offering a paid student opportunity under the Dean of Students Office.

Qualifications

• Must have a cumulative 2.5 GPA.
• Full-time student (min 12 credit hours) and not on probation.
• Must enroll in ARTD 202 or have completed the class.
• May not hold an elected or appointed position with the Student Government Association.

Responsibilities

• Work with editors on artistic direction of the print products.
• Collaborate with leadership to create effective designs for news content.
• Serve as the right hand of the editor in chief to ensure production flow.
• Handle layout and design for all issues of the newspaper.
• Keep consistent typography among the paper.
• Design graphics and art for the paper when necessary.
• Provide drafts of newspaper pages to the editor for editing before publication deadlines.
• Attend meetings held by the newspaper adviser.
• Coordinate with Post and Courier to send correct deliverables.
• Work with advertising representative in creating ads or graphics for clients.
• Ensure digital assistant has PDF files of newspaper for the website.
• Meet for the story budget with executive staff to pitch ideas and discuss design options.
• Design spreads and coordinate with photographers or departments for photos.
• Maintain electronic archive of issues and InDesign files and PDFs.
• Perform any other pertinent duties as assigned.
