Your Job

Georgia-Pacific is hiring a Packaging Test Engineer to join GP's Innovation Institute in Norcross, GA! You will plan, execute, analyze, and communicate packaging material and transportation tests that reduce supply chain cost and drive sustainability improvements. You'll turn test data into clear conclusions and actionable recommendations that help customers and internal teams optimize packaging performance against real-world hazards.

Our Team

The Innovation Institute Packaging team partners with customers to analyze end-to-end supply chains and deliver innovative packaging solutions. We combine laboratory testing, transportation simulation, and consultative problem-solving to create measurable cost, sustainability, and performance improvements.

What You Will Do
  • Translate customer needs and business outcomes into technically sound test plans that evaluate packaging performance and failure risk.
  • Deliver reliable laboratory and transportation test execution (material properties, shock, vibration, compression, atmospheric conditions) and troubleshoot to ensure confidence in results.
  • Analyze test data with appropriate statistical methods and engineering judgment to surface trends, root causes, and practical recommendations.
  • Communicate methods, findings, and tradeoffs clearly through concise technical reports and stakeholder-facing summaries that support informed decisions.
  • Drive continuous improvement in test methods, lab processes, equipment readiness, and customer experience to increase throughput, data quality, and impact.
Who You Are (Basic Qualifications)
  • Bachelor's degree in Science, Engineering, Packaging Science, Materials Science, or related discipline; OR Associate degree in Science/Engineering plus 4+ years of laboratory physical property testing experience.
  • Experience working in a laboratory following standard operating procedures, work instructions, and safety and housekeeping expectations.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze data sets, identify trends or abnormalities, and draw technically sound conclusions.
  • Experience in preparing technical reports or communicating technical findings to stakeholders.
  • Ability to become certified for forklift operations and safely operate material handling equipment as required.

What Will Put You Ahead
  • Bachelor's degree in Packaging Science, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, or similar with 2+ years of lab testing experience.
  • Direct experience with ISTA transportation testing protocols and packaging performance evaluations.
  • Hands-on experience assessing packaging under shock, vibration, compression, temperature, and humidity conditions.
  • Familiarity with corrugated packaging, containerboard, recyclable mailers, or related materials.
  • Knowledge of statistics and experience with JMP, Minitab, Power BI, or similar analysis/visualization tools.
  • Track record developing new test methods, improving lab workflows, or translating customer needs into practical test approaches.
