Job Summary:
The Packaging Machine Operator, under general supervision, is responsible for the safe, efficient, and continuous operation of snack packaging machinery.

Essential Job Duties:

  1. Maintains shift documentation (i.e., Metal Detector and Batch Order Verifications).
  2. Reads production schedule and plans accordingly.
  3. Reads and interprets schedule in MicroStrategy.
  4. Able to print labels on different printers, choosing the correct program for each printer; moves eye and cleans printers.
  5. Performs nitrogen testing.
  6. Efficiently maintains the operation of packaging machinery by monitoring codes, dates, and prices.
  7. Maintains an adequate supply of roll stock and ensures all packaging materials are available for each machine.
  8. Sets up and writes new programs for bag makers.
  9. Writes and/or edits machine micro logic as needed to maintain an efficient and low waste operation.
  10. Creates and modifies code dates.
  11. Performs preventative maintenance on equipment. Sets up and makes minor scale repairs and adjustments.
  12. Performs span calibration and/or adjustments on scales.
  13. Efficiently operates packaging equipment including case sealers and robot cells, involving machine setups, troubleshooting, changeovers, and sanitation cleanup.
  14. Properly plans ahead for machine changeovers.
  15. Monitors and adjusts each machine to ensure proper cut-off of film and bags.
  16. Ensures machines are running at standard speeds.
  17. Monitors product appearance and adheres to weight control program.
  18. Identifies and resolves packaged product quality issues.
  19. Properly accounts for product run-off and handles this product accordingly.
  20. Keeps machines and work areas clean.
  21. Reports any maintenance problems to appropriate technician and/or supervisor.
  22. Practices and adheres to safety and hygiene guidelines/procedures.
  23. Stores supplies in designated areas.
  24. Keeps work area aisles/exits clear and free from obstruction.
  25. Follows instructions for safe lifting/carrying of various sizes, shapes, and weights.
  26. May maintain shift documentation.
  27. May provide leadership and direction to packers.
  28. May be qualified to perform as Back-up Packaging Coordinator.
  29. Mandatory overtime may be required.
  30. May perform other duties as required.

Scope of Responsibility:
No supervisory responsibility.

Knowledge and Skill Requirements:
Candidate must be comfortable communicating with team members and management staff. Candidate will be trained and must be able to perform all job functions within the department.

Education and Experience:
High School Diploma or GED and/or 1-year production experience in a manufacturing environment required.

Professional Licenses or Certifications:
Lock/out tag/out certified or become certified within three months.

Physical Demands:
Must be able to comply with the physical demands of constantly lifting and moving stock. Ability to lift 40+ lbs. regularly and occasionally lift/move more than 50+ lbs. with assistance.

Work Environment:
Regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts, hot/wet/humid conditions, and loud noise levels.

Travel Required:
Minimal travel may be required.
